Textured Washcloth Crochet Pattern (FREE)

Textured Washcloth Crochet Pattern & Tutorial

This textured crochet washcloth pattern uses the beautiful Alpine stitch, which is ideal for using graduated colors. It gives a long ridge on the right side that looks similar to ribbing but is much easier.

Supplies

• Yarn: Worsted (10ply, category 4) cotton.
• Crochet hook: 5mm  (H)
• Tapestry needle: For weaving ends.

This textured washcloth design is ideal for graduated yarns or using multiple shades of the same color. In my graduated sample, I changed color every 4 rows until about halfway.

Here are some suggested hook sizes to substitute another weight yarn in your textured washcloth crochet pattern.

I used various blue shades from the Paintbox Cotton Aran line. This is one of my favorite cotton yarns; it is soft and shows great stitch definition. Consider Lion Brand Pima or 24/7 cotton yarn if you want added texture. Sheepjes has a lovely soft cotton line as well.

You must use cotton yarn for textured washcloths for the greatest water absorption. Acrylic yarns actually repel water making them not very efficient washcloths.

• sc =single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet stitch
• fpdc =front post double crochet
• ch = chain stitch
• st/sts =stitch/ stitches
• YO = yarn over.

Special Stitch – Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)

The fpdc is crocheted the same way as a regular dc, except you will put your hook into the post of the stitch below instead of the 2 loops at the top. Read the full article on front post double crochet.

1. YO, insert hook through the front post from right to left.
2. YO, pull through (3 loops)
3. YO, pull through 2 (2 loops)
4. YO, pull through 2 (1 loop)

Pattern Notes

• Stitches – The ch1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. Hdc or sc into the base of that chain.
• Skill Level – This textured washcloth crochet pattern is easy.
• Dimensions & Gauge – Size approximately 8.5 inches square (21.54cm) after blocking. Gauge is not important for washcloths/dishcloths.

Row 1:

1. Chain 29+2 loosely (Odd number of stitches).
2. 1 dc in the third chain of the hook, dc to the end of the row.
3. Turn.

Row 2:

1. Chain 1, sc in each stitch. (29 stitches)
2. Turn.

Row 3:

1. Chain 1, hdc.
2. 1 fpdc in the first dc of row 1 (you will skip over the sc row).
3. 1dc, into the sc row.
4. *1fpdc, 1dc*.
5. Repeat from* to end of row. End with a hdc into the last sc.

NOTE: Each fpdc goes down into the dc row, and you will skip a dc in between each one. So your fpdc goes into every 2^nd dc of the first row. Your dc goes into every 2^nd sc of that row.

Row 4:

1. Chain 1, sc in each stitch of the previous row.

Row 5:

1. Chain 1, hdc.
2. *1 fpdc, 1 dc.
3. Repeat from * to end of row.
4. End with a hdc into the last sc.

NOTE: The fpdc will be worked into the previous regular dc, the dc will be worked into the sc from row 4.  This gives you alternating longer stitches.

More Rows:

• Repeat rows 4-5 until your crochet piece is the square. Approx 28 rows total.

Finishing the Crochet Textured Washcloth

1. Single crochet around the edge of your textured washcloth with 3sc into each corner. Slip stitch to join.
2. OPTIONAL HOOK – At the corner, chain 8 (or longer if you wish), join to base with a slip stitch.
3. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
