Crochet Legwarmers Yarn Details
I used 1 skein of Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in the color Serene. This 100% acrylic yarn is so soft and squishy and lovely to crochet with. I separated the colors in the yarn cake so I could have better control of the stripe placement. The colors were changed every 4 rows in the main part and I had a lot more of the darker orange so used that for the ribbing section.
Every skein will have a different color distribution, so separate the colors and then decide where to place them. I put the stripes in a different order for the second crochet legwarmers.

How to Crochet Leg Warmers (Step by Step)
The rib sections of the basic legwarmer crochet pattern are crocheted sideways, separately from the main body of the legwarmer. This ensures that the rib parts will gather slightly to keep the leg warmers in place and prevent them from sliding down. The blo sc creates a stretchier rib.
Abbreviations
All instructions in this basic legwarmers crochet pattern are written in US terminology.
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- blo sc = back loop only single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- rep = repeat
Gauge
13 st and 8 rows of dc with a 5mm (H-8) hook.
1. Crochet the Bottom Ribbing
This will make the lower rib of your leg warmer.
- Beginning with the 4mm hook, Chain 13.
- Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across row 1 of the lower band. (12 sc). Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch). Sc. In the next 10 stitches, blo sc. Sc in the final stitch. (12 stitches)
- Next rows: Repeat row 2 until you have the following number of rows in total. S = 38, M = 46, L = 52, XL = 58.
You can test the fit by wrapping the band around your ankle. If you change the number of rows, make sure you have an even number of rows at this point.
- Slip stitch the narrow ends of the band together.
- Turn the rib section inside out to conceal the seam.
2. Body of the Leg Warmer
- Round 1: Change to the 5mm hook. Ch 1. Sc at the end of each row all the way around the band (38/46/52/58 stitches). With a sl st, join to the first sc.
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc stitch), dc into each stitch, slip stitch to join.
- Continue working round 2 until the body of your leg warmer is the required length. (S=13 inches, M=14 inches, L=15 inches, XL =16 inches) You can adjust the height of your leg warmers by adding or subtracting rounds from this section. The top band will be around 2 inches on top of this.
3. Transition
- Return to the 4mm hook.
- Sc in every stitch around.
- Sl st to the first sc to join.
4. Crochet the Top Band Ribbing
Now, you will start working sideways again.
- Ch 7.
- Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each subsequent chain. (6 stitches) Sl st to the next stitch. Sl st into the following stitch as well. Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1. Skip the first two slip stitches and in the next 5 stitches, blo sc. Sc in the final st. (6 sts). Turn.
- Row 3: Ch 1. Sc in the same stitch. In the next 5 stitches, blo sc. (6 sts). Sl st to the next stitch. Sl st into the following stitch. Turn.
- Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you get back to the start.
- Finish off leaving a long tail.
- Whip stitch the two ends of the top band together with the tail and a yarn needle.
- Weave your ends in.
5. Make the Second Crochet Legwarmers
- Repeat all of the steps for the second crochet leg warmer.
It’s important to keep the tension and gauge the same throughout the process so that the leg warmers look the same. Don’t be afraid to make changes along the way to ensure that they fit perfectly and have your own touch.
In Conclusion
Crocheting leg warmers is a fun and satisfying project that lets you make warm and stylish winter accessories. Following the step-by-step instructions, you can make a pair of leg warmers that fit your style and keep you warm on cold days. When you’re done making both leg warmers, take a moment to look at your work. Add buttons or ribbons to make your leg warmers even more unique.
