Chevron crochet stitch is made up of repeating v-shapes. It makes up a ripple or wave pattern. The v-shapes can be narrow and sharp or wide and gentle. The chevron stitch pattern is also known as the zigzag pattern or the ripple pattern. It is an easy stitch to learn. As long as you can do any of the basic crochet stitches, and increase and decrease with that stitch you will be able to create a chevron crochet masterpiece! Chevron stitch is useful for creating all kinds of things, from hats and scarves to bags and blankets.

Materials
- Yarn in the thickness and color of your choice. You can choose any thickness of yarn as long as you have the correct hook size for that yarn. If you want to make a dishcloth or a facecloth, use cotton yarn with a fine hook. If you want to make a large throw or blanket, use chunky yarn and a thick hook. The chevron crochet stitch lends itself to working in different colored stripes, so choose at least two colors of yarn in the same weight.
- Crochet hook in a suitable size for your yarn.
- Scissors.
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends after color changes.

How To Do Chevron Crochet Stitch - Single
Foundation Chain:
- Start with a multiple of 17, then add 16 more stitches for the side edges. (8 on each side.) You can make your crochet fabric as wide or as narrow as you choose, depending on what your finished item will be.
- For practice, my example will be 33 chains.
Row 1:
- Single crochet 2 together into 2nd chain from the hook. [To single crochet 2 together - Insert hook into next loop, yarn over, pull loop through.
- Do not complete this stitch. (2 loops on hook)
- Insert hook into next stitch
- Yarn over, and pull the yarn through.
- Stop, do not complete the stitch. (3 loops on hook.)
- Yarn over, and pull through all 3 loops at once.
- Then single crochet once into each of next 5 stitches.
- Make 3 single crochet into the next stitch. (This makes the peak of your ‘mountain’ or the top of your zigzag.)
- Single crochet once into each of next 7 sttiches.
- Skip 2 stitches. (This makes the ‘valley’ or the bottom of your zigzag.)
- Single crochet once into each of next 7 stiches.
- Single crochet 3 times in next stitch. (Next ‘peak’.)
- Single crochet into each of the next 5 stitches.
- Single crochet the last 2 stitches together.
- Chain1, and turn.
- Repeat this row for every row of your crochet item, changing colors whenever necessary. Weave in your ends as you go.
Chevron Crochet Stitch Variations
Your color choices and width of stripes will play a big part in the final appearance of your item. Neutral colors in very wide stripes will make a lovely throw or blanket. Ombre color gradations look great with this pattern. On the other end of the scale, bright, contrasting colors will also be very effective. You can also separate each color with a white or neutral stripe. The possibilities are endless!
Double Chevron Crochet Stitch
This chevron pattern can be created just as easily using half double crochet or double crochet stitches. The taller the stitch you choose, the looser your fabric will end up. Your item will work up even faster with taller stitches.
You just need to follow the pattern for the single crochet chevron, but each time, substitute single crochet with the stitch of your choice.
Whichever stitch you choose, you just need to repeat the pattern of crocheting 3 stitches together (or decreasing stitches) for the valleys, and crocheting 3 stitches into 1 stitch (or increasing stitches) for the peaks.
If you want sharper chevrons, have fewer stitches between the peaks and valleys. If you want gentler slopes, have more stitches in between your increases and decreases.
Chevron Crochet Stitch In The Round
To make a beautiful and unusual baby blanket or throw, you can create a round version of the chevron pattern. Because of the peaks and valleys, it will have a lovely star shape. It is a little more complicated because you have to calculate the increases for each round into the peak and valley patterns. Just follow the pattern below, and while you are working, make sure that each peak is exactly above the peak from the previous row!
Of course, your color changes are completely up to you. You must decide how many rounds of each color you want to do!

- You will be working 1 round of v-st, then 2 rounds of shells each repeat.
- On each shell round the number of dc worked before and after the ch 2 spaces must increase by one, to allow for the ever increasing circles you are creating!
- The v-st rounds are non increase rounds where your stitch count remains the same.
- As your circle increases in size, the chevrons will become more pronounced.
