Supplies

• Bulky/chunky weight yarn (12ply, category #5). Approximately 500m (548y). (4 colors of 125m/137y each)
• 6.5 mm crochet hook (K-10.5) or size to meet gauge.
• Scissors

I used 4 skeins of Lion Brand Hue and Me in colors Sea Glass, Salt, Desert and Agave. This is a wool blend yarn so is really warm. It is a little thicker than some of the acrylic yarns I have used and is nice to crochet with. I love the natural color range.

Confident Beginner/Easy

Gauge (4×4” Swatch)

10 sc on a K-10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook. However, gauge is not particularly important for crocheting scarves. You can always add or subtract rows to make it the perfect length.

Sizing

My samples were 76″ length x 10″ in width (193 x 25 cm), not including tassels. The length can be adjusted by altering the number rows.

• dc = double crochet stitch
• ch = chain stitch
• ch1-sp = chain 1 space
• ch2-sp = chain 2 space
• YO = yarn over

Chunky Scarf Crochet Pattern, Written Instructions

Here are the step by step instructions for this easy crochet scarf.

Row 1

1. Chain 30.
2. Insert hook into 2^nd chain from hook, sc in 15 chains.
3. (1sc, ch1, 1sc) into 15^th chain. (this is the point)
4. 1 Sc across rest of row.
5. Turn. (30 stitches)

Row 2

1. Chain 3 (counts as 1dc).
2. * Skip 2 stitches. Dc 3 into the next stitch (first cluster).
3. Repeat from * under you have 4 clusters in total.
4. Sk2, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) into next stitch. (Point – crochet in the ch-1 sp of the row below) 
5. * Sk2. Dc 3 into the next chain.
6. Repeat from * 3 more times. (There should be 3 chains left.)
7. Sk2, Dc into the last chain.

Row 3

1. Chain 3. Turn.
2. Skip the first space and dc3 into the second space from the end.
3. Dc3 in the next spaces to get to the ch2-sp at the point.
4. (3dc, ch3, 3dc) into the ch- 2 space at the point.
5. 3dc into next 4 spaces. Dc into last space. (10 clusters total – 5 each side)

Row 3 and Beyond

1. Repeat row 3, changing color every 3 rows, until your scarf measures 68 inches (172cm), measured along the center of scarf .
2. Always ensure you have 10 clusters in total.
3. Fasten off and weave ends.

Granny Square – Round 1

Now you have finished the main part of the chunky crochet scarf pattern, it is time to make the granny square that will be inserted at one end.

1. Start with a magic ring, or chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.     
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2dc into your ring.  
3. *Ch2, 3dc into ring.
4. Repeat from * 2 more times.
5. Ch 2, join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3. (4 clusters)
6. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Granny Square – Round 2

1. Join new yarn into any corner chain space.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2dc, ch2, 3 dc, all into the same space.
3. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) into next corner.
4. Repeat from * 2 more times.
5. Join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3. (8 clusters)
6. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Granny Square – Round 3

1. Join new yarn into any corner chain space.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2dc, ch2, 3 dc, all into the same space.
3. *3dc into next space along side. (3dc, ch2, 3dc) into next corner.
4. Repeat from * 2 more times.
5. 3dc into next side space.
6. Join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3. (12 clusters)
7. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Granny Square -Round 4

1. Join new yarn into any corner chain space.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2dc, ch2, 3 dc, all into the same space.
3. *3dc into 2 next spaces along side. (3dc, ch2, 3dc) into next corner.
4. Repeat from * 2 more times.
5. 3dc into next 2 side spaces.
6. Join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3. (16 clusters)
7. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Join Square

1. Place the end of the scarf and granny square as shown.
2. Using a tapestry needle and whip stitch, join the square to the scarf.
3. Fasten off and weave all ends.

Finishing the Chunky Scarf Crochet Pattern
