What You Need

• Yarn: Super Bulky (category #6, 16ply)
• Crochet hook: 9 mm hook or size to meet gauge.
• Tapestry needle: to weave ends.

For my sample, I used Lion Brand Thick and Quick Wool Ease which is a wool blend. I love how this crochet blanket feels now it is finished. It is quite heavy and really warm and soft. If you are looking for a more economical option, try a 100% acrylic. Acrylic also gives you a lighter blanket.

Crochet Blanket Sizing

This blanket is made from granny squares, each approximately 9 inches (23 cm) when finished. You can easily customize the size of your blanket by changing the number of squares you make.

How to Work Out Your Blanket Size

Each square = 9 inches (23 cm)

To calculate your finished blanket size:

• Width: Number of squares across × 9 inches
• Length: Number of squares down × 9 inches

Everyone’s tension is different. For best results, make one square first and measure it before starting your full blanket. If your square is larger or smaller than 9 inches, use your own measurement in place of 9 inches for more accurate sizing.

Custom Sizing

1. Decide how wide and long you want your blanket.
2. Divide each measurement by 9 inches.
3. Round to the nearest whole number.
4. That gives you the number of squares needed.

Example: If you want a blanket about 54 inches wide:

• 54 ÷ 9 = 6 squares
• So you’ll need 6 squares across.

Abbreviations

All crochet terms are in US terms.

• ch = chain stitch crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• dc = double crochet stitches
• tr = treble crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• YO = yarn over

Round 1, Center

1. Start with a magic ring, or chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch.
2. Chain 3 (first dc). Work 15 more double crochet into your ring.  
3. Join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3 (16 stitches).
4. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 2, Color 2

IMPORTANT – The trick to doing a puff stitch is to keep all loops very loose.

1. FIRST PUFF STITCH – Chain 2. YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull through. (3 loops on hook). YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull through. (5 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
2. Chain 1.
3. Next Puff Stitches – YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO, and pull through. (3 loops) YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull through. (5 loops) YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull through. (7 loops)YO and draw the hook through all the loops on the hook. (1 loop)
4. Chain 1. (This secures the puff stitch.)
5. Repeat the second puff stitch for all the stitches around the circle. (16 puff stitches total)
6. Join with slip stitch tothe first puff stitch. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 3, Color 3

1. First Cluster Stitch – Join new yarn into any chain 1 space. Chain 3. (Ch3 is the first part of the first cluster only) *YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, pull up a loop. (3 loops)  YO pull through 2 loops. (2 loops) Repeat from * twice more into the same space. (4 loops) YO, pull through all 4 loops.
2. Chain 2.
3. Next Cluster Stitches – *YO, insert hook into next space, YO, pull up a loop. YO pull through 2 loops. (2 loops) Repeat from * three more times into the same space. (5 loops) YO, pull through all 5 loops.
4. Chain 2.
5. Repeat for all the chain spaces around the circle. (16 clusters)
6. Join with a slip stitch. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

1. Round 4, Outside Color – Join new yarn in any chain-space. Chain 4 (counts as the first treble stitch). Crochet 2 trebles in the same space. Crochet 3 dc in the next chain-space. Crochet 3 hdc in the next chain-space. Crochet 3 dc in the next chain-space.
2. First corner: (3 tr, chain 3, 3 tr) in the next chain-space.

Now, repeat that side + corner pattern to make the other sides and corners.

Blocking Squares

To make your blanket look its best, you will need to block the squares. This shapes and sets the granny squares, smoothing out uneven stitches and defining the edge. Read more about blocking crochet.

Repeat

Repeat for the number of squares you need for your blanket. For my sample, I crocheted 30 squares (5×6 grid).

How to Join Sunburst Granny Squares

Arrange your squares in the order you like. Take your time to make sure it looks good from a distance. Once I’ve arranged them the way I like, I take a photo with my phone in case any get moved later. That way, I always have something to refer to.

I used a flat slip stitch to join the squares. This method creates a flat, neat seam on the front of your blanket while securely joining your granny squares. It is worked on the right side of the fabric. If you’d like an alternative method, read my article on how to join granny squares.

Border for the Sunburst Granny Square Blanket

1. Join the border color (grey) on any edge.
2. Chain 1, sc into base of chain and sc around the edge. In each granny square corner, 2sc. 3sc into the blanket edge corners.
3. Sl st to join row and fasten off if changing color.
4. Add 2 more single crochet rows with 3sc into each corner (row 2&3 – cream). Fasten off.
