Chunky Neck Warmer Crochet Pattern (Free!)

This is a really quick crochet project. The main part took me just over an hour and then about the same to work out the shell border. Of course the written pattern is already worked out for you here so you may be even faster! I felt so feminine when I wore this with a pair of jeans and white top. It made a really simple outfit look so much nicer.

Chunky Neck Warmer Crochet Pattern

Supplies

• Yarn: Super Bulky (category #6, 14-16 ply), 160m/175y.
• Crochet hook: 9mm (N-13).
• Tapestry needle to weave ends.
• 3 x 1-inch buttons (2.5cm)

For the pink sample I used Lion Brand Hometown in Providence Pink. Other yarns that would work well include Lion Brand Thick and Quick, Paintbox Super Chunky, and Bernat Sofee Chunky.

• Skill Level – This neck warmer crochet pattern using chunky yarn is easy since it just uses basic crochet stitches. The main stitch used is the half double crochet.
• Size – Approximately 32 inches long by 10 inches high after blocking (81x25cm).
• Gauge (4×4” swatch) – 6.6 sc x 8 r on N-13 (9mm) hook.

• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet stitch
• tr = treble crochet
• ch = chain stitch
• sk = skip
• st/sts =stitch/ stitches

Special Stitches – HDCBLO

In order to create the ribbing effect on this scarf, we will use the half double crochet back loop only, abbreviated hdc blo.

After row 1, look at the top of the stitches from the previous row. You’ll see that each stitch has a V shape on top, consisting of two loops: the front loop (closer to you) and the back loop (further from you).

In hdc blo you will be working into the back loops only. See where the yellow needle is inserted.

The stitch is completed the same way as a regular hdc, only you will insert the hook into the back loop and not through both loops as you usually would.

1. Yarn over, then insert your hook under the back loop only of the next stitch (instead of going under both loops as you would for a regular HDC).
2. Yarn over again and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over once more and pull through all three loops on the hook. This completes one HDC BLO.

Written Instructions

Row 1 (Hdc)

1. Chain 62 (chain very loosely).
2. Hdc into 3^rd chain from the hook
3. Hdc across row (60 stitches).Turn.

Row 2 (Hdc Blo)

1. Chain 2 (does not count as stitch), hdc.
2. Hdc into the back loops (hdcblo) across the row.
3. In the last stitch make 1 hdc. Turn.

Rows 3 – 14 (Hdc Blo)

1. Repeat row 2.

End Edge

1. Turn to crochet along the shorter end edge.
2. Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc across edge. Turn. (18 stitches)
3. *Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), hdc across row. Turn.
4. Repeat from * for 3 more hdc rows.

Shell Border

1. Turn to add border to the long edge.
2. Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc into end.
3. (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) between 2^nd and 3rd hdc row.
4. *Sc into first hdc stitch, Sk 1, (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) into next stitch, Sk 1, Sc in next stitch.
5. Repeat from * across row. Fasten off and weave ends

Finishing

To make your scarf look its best, you will need to block it. This shapes and sets the scarf, smoothing out uneven stitches and defining the edge. Read more about blocking crochet. Block the finished wrap to 32 inches x 10 inches (measured at widest part of shell border)

You will now need to add buttons to the edge. Fold the scarf as shown. Sew buttons to the edge of the hdcblo rows (not on the shells). The first and third buttons will be roughly 9 inches apart.

Fold the left side over and do up the buttons. The buttons will go through the holes in the crochet. Fold over the top to form a collar.

You will now have a warm neck this winter while looking so stylish. If you like a 2 tone effect you could do the border in a contrasting color.
