Crochet Button Cowl, Free Beginner Pattern

6.6 sc x 8 r on N-13 (9mm) hook.

Supplies

• Yarn: Category#6, Super Bulky (14-16 ply), 74m/81y of color A and 20m/22y color B.
• Crochet hook: 9mm (N-13)
• Tapestry needle
• Buttons: 3 x 1 inch (2.5cm) buttons

For the sample, I used Lion Brand Hometown. It took 1 skein of the cram and then just a scrap of the green. If you haven’t used this yarn before, you really should try it. You wouldn’t believe how soft it is. It is 100% acrylic and one of the most popular yarns on Amazon. I think it is just a great combination of price and quality.

Other super bulky yarns that I regularly use and like are:

• Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (wool blend that comes in an amazing array of colors.
• Bernat Softee Chunky (soft acrylic yarn)

• hdcblo = half double crochet back loop only.

Special Stitch – Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only

In order to create the ribbing effect on this scarf, we will use the half double crochet back loop only, abbreviated hdc blo.

Identifying the Back Loops: After row 1, look at the top of the stitches from the previous row. You’ll see that each stitch has a V shape on top, consisting of two loops: the front loop (closer to you) and the back loop (further from you).

In hdc blo you will be working into he back loops only. See where the yellow hook is inserted.

The stitch is completed the same way as a regular hdc, only you will insert the hook into the back loop and not through both loops as you usually would.

1. Yarn over, then insert your hook under the back loop only of the next stitch (instead of going under both loops as you would for a regular HDC).
2. Yarn over again and pull up a loop (three loops on the hook),
3. Yarn over once more and pull through all three loops on the hook. This completes one HDC BLO.

Crochet Button Cowl, Instructions

Foundation

1. In color A, chain 62. If you wish to increase or decrease the length, chain a multiple of 5 plus 2 for turning.

Row 1 (Hdc)

1. Insert hook into 3^rd chain from the hook
2. Hdc across row.
3. Turn.

Row 2 (Hdc Blo)

1. Chain 2 (does not count as stitch). In first stitch, hdc.
2. Hdc into the back loops (hdcblo) across the row.
3. In the last stitch make 1 hdc.
4. Turn.

Rows 3 – 12 (Hdc Blo)

1. Repeat row 2.

Edge

The edging is a great way for you to lengthen or shorten the crochet button cowl by adjusting the number of rows. Before you fasten off in step 8, just try it around your neck. Don’t forget the top of the collar will fold down.

1. Turn to crochet along the shorter edge.
2. Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc.
3. Sc across edge. (18 stitches)
4. Change to color B.
5. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), hdc.
6. Hdc across row. Turn.
7. Repeat for 4 more hdc rows.
8. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking

To make your crochet button scarf look its best, you will need to block it. This shapes and sets the scarf, smoothing out uneven stitches and defining the edge. Read more about blocking crochet

Adding Buttons

1. Fold the scarf on the right as shown and then overlap the left.
2. You can make your buttons functional and sew them along the side. Alternatively, sew buttons on top through both layers.

Put the crochet button cowl around your neck, and do the buttons up. Fold down the top of the collar, enlarging the neck size. Once you have it in place, you can probably get it over your head each time without undoing the buttons.
