Supplies for Crochet Scrubbies

  • Cotton Yarn - It is definitely best to use cotton yarn for these. It can be light worsted (DK or 8 ply) or worsted weight yarn. Acrylic yarn is not suitable is it will not absorb water.
  • Crochet hook size that matches the yarn. Use a 4-4.5mm hook for light worsted or a 5mm hook for worsted weight cotton yarn.
  • Yarn needle or tapestry needle.
  • Small scissors.

How to Crochet Face Scrubbies (Free Pattern)

Here is the free crochet pattern for 3 shapes - round, square and heart.

How to Crochet Face Scrubbies - ROUND

This round face scrubbie pattern uses half double crochet stitch. Once you get confident, you can use other stitches such as puff stitch to create even more texture.

Crochet gauge is not important for this project since your scrubbies can be any size.

How big should crochet scrubbies be? A recommended diameter is around 4 inches (10cm), but you can make them as large or small as you wish.

Foundation:

  • Begin with a crochet magic ring or chain 3 and slip stitch to close.

Round 1:

  • Hdc 8 stitches inside the circle.
  • Slip stitch to the first hdc to complete the round.

  • 2hdc in each stitch around the circle.
  • Slip stitch to complete the round.

How to Crochet Face Scrubbies - SQUARE

For those of you who prefer to crochet back and forth, instead of in the round, here is a pattern for a square face scrubby.

Single crochet stitches are used to make this classic square crochet face scrubby pattern. To get the softly textured surface, alternate crocheting under the front and back loops of the stitches.

One of my favorite textures is alternating front loop and back loop. It's easy to make and looks great.

To crochet back loop only (blo):

To work in back loop only, insert your hook into the back loop of the previous row of stitches, instead of inserting it through both loops, as you usually would. In this picture, the needle is inserted into the back loop. That is where you will insert the hook.

  • For single crochet blo: Insert hook into blo, yarn over, pick up a loop, yarn over and through both loops =1 blo sc

To crochet front loop only (flo)

For flo you will only work on the front loop which is the one nearest to you. The front loop is marked with a needle on the next working stitch.

  • For single crochet flo: Insert hook only through this front loop, yarn over and up a loop, yarn over and through both loops = 1 flo sc

To make square scrubby:

Foundation: Chain 14 or the desired number of stitches for the size you want.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and each chain across, turn. (13 stitches)

Row 2:

  • Chain 1, sc in same stitch.
  • flo sc in the next stitch,
  • *In next stitch blo sc,
  • In next stitch flo sc,
  • Repeat from * through until one st is left, sc in last st, turn. (13 stitches)

By working alternate flo and blo, you can see the texture you are creating.

  • Row 3 onwards: Repeat row 2 until the square measures the size you want.
  • Final row: Chain1, sc in each stitch across. Cut the yarn and weave the ends in.

I really like how these crochet face scrubbies have a double-sided surface. This scrubby is the same on both sides because it is done flat in a square.

How to Crochet Face Scrubbies - HEART

If you are going to make a set of scrubbies as a gift, you may want to make them heart-shaped, in the recipient’s favorite color.

Round 3:

  • *1 sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch.

Round 4:

This is where we create the heart shape for the face scrubby.

  • 3 dc in first st, 3 dc in next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts,
  • (hdc, dc, hdc) all in next stitch. (This makes your heart point)
  • 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, 3 dc in the next stitch, 3 dc in the next stitch,
  • slip stitch in the last stitch.
  • Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Scrubby Crochet Pattern FAQs

Are Crochet Face Scrubbies Good?

Most people who use crochet face scrubbies say they work really well and were better than disposable cotton rounds. They like that they are gentle, good for the environment, cheap, easy to make, and could be changed.

Crochet face scrubbies are good because:

  • Help you save money - One skein of cotton can make four to five scrubbies.
  • Provide soft exfoliation - Depending on the stitch you use to make them, they can be flat, have ridges, or have little puffs on them. This lets you change how much you exfoliate to meet your needs.
  • They don't have any lint and don't break - These will be made of solid cotton, so you won't have to worry about them ripping! You will be surprised how durable they are.
  • Adapt to your needs - They can be any size you want.
  • Simple to Clean - When you're done, you can throw them into the machine with your dirty clothes.
  • Eco-friendly - Reusable scrubbies are much better for the environment than ones you throw away.
  • Great Stashbuster - They are a great way to use up small pieces of cotton left over from making dishcloths or amigurumi.
  • They make great presents - You can give them as a gift in a glass jar, wrap them in a paper label made with a Cricut, or just tie a pretty ribbon around a stack.
  • You can make them match the theme of your bathroom

What yarn is best for crochet face scrubbies?

Cotton is the best yarn for crochet face scrubbies as it is absorbent and easily washed. It will not pill or irritate the face.

Reusable Crochet Face Scrubbies - In Conclusion

What is the best way to use crochet face scrubbies? Wet your face scrubby in warm water before using it. Apply a small bit of facial soap to your face and gently rub it in using the scrubby pads. Cool water should be used to rinse your skin and the scrubby.

Wring out your crochet face scrubby when you've finished using it. Then simply machine wash. These scrubbies require very little yarn, so you can crochet a whole lot with just one skein.
