Double Crochet Throw Pattern, Free and Easy!

Make a double crochet throw with this easy, free pattern from Treasurie. Double crochet is my favorite basic crochet stitch and is so versatile. Here, it is used individually and in groups of 3 to form granny clusters. The added stripes make a really easy pattern that looks dynamic and interesting, so if you are looking for a fast, easy crochet blanket pattern, this is the one for you.

Double Crochet Throw Pattern Details

Supplies

• Yarn: Worsted Weight (category #4, 10ply)
• Crochet hook: 5 mm hook or size to meet gauge.
• Tapestry needle: to weave ends.

I used 4 Seasons Half and Half yarn; this is an Australian yarn, so it is not widely available, but you can use any worsted-weight yarn. Some of my favorite brands of worsted yarn for this project include:

• Brava Worsted (100% Acrylic and great for blankets. They have the most amazing color range)
• Paintbox Wool Mix Aran (My overall favorite yarn for scarves and wearables. Can be a bit expensive to use for larger blankets)
• Paintbox Simply Aran (This is their inexpensive acrylic option. I’ve used it to make a couple of blankets and they are soft and squishy.)
• Caron Soft (inexpensive acrylic option)
• Red Heart Super Saver (While this is not the softest yarn, you can’t beat it in terms of value for money)

13 st and 14 rows of sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook.

You can use this pattern to make any size blanket.

Abbreviations

Pattern written in US terms.

• dc = double crochet stitch
• sc = single crochet
• ch = chain stitch
• sp = space
• sl st = slip stitch
• st/sts =stitch/ stitches

Sizing and Yarn

Here are some sizing suggestions and yarn lengths.

• The ratio of color A to color B is approximately 4:1. This means for every 4 balls of color A you will need 1 ball of color B for the stripes.
• The lengths below can be affected by your crochet tension, and type of yarn.
• My sample was 38×28 inches and used 800 meters/875y of yarn.
• To work out the number of chains you need use the following formula  (size in inches x 3.25) +3. Round up to a multiple of 3.

Example: For a 20 inch blanket (20×3.25)+3 = 68 >> round up to a multiple of 3 = 69 chains.

Row 1 (Color A, Dc Row)

1. Color A. Chain any mulitple of 3. See the table on the previous page for the number of chains for each size.
2. Insert hook into 4^th chain and dc. Dc across row. Turn.

Row 2 (Color A, Dc Row)

1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc stitch).
2. Dc across row. (last dc into 3^rd chain). Turn.

Row 3 (Color B, Dc Row)

1. Change to color B.
2. Repeat row 2 (dc row).

Row 4 (Color A, Cluster Row)

1. Change to color A. Ch3 (counts as first dc). 2 dc into base of chain.
2. *Sk 2, 3dc in next stitch. Repeat from * until last 3 stiches.
3. Sk2, 1dc into last stich. Turn. (last dc into 3^rd chain)

Row 5, 6, 7, 8 (Color A, Cluster Row)

1. Ch3 (counts as first dc). 2 dc in first space. *3dc in next space.
2. Repeat from * until end. 1dc into last stich. Turn.
3. Repeat 3 more times so you have a total of 5 cluster rows.

Row 9 (Color B, Dc Row)

1. Color B. Repeat row 2 (dc row)

Row 10, 11, 12 (Color A, Dc Rows)

1. Color A.
2. Repeat row 2 (dc rows) 3 times.

Subsequent Rows

Repeat the sequence below until you reach your desired length. At the end of the blanket, end with 2 dc rows instead of 3 so it matches the beginning.

1. Color B – 1 Dc row
2. Color A – 5 Cluster rows
3. Color B – 1 Dc row
4. Color A – 3 dc rows

Border

1. ROW 1 – Using color A, Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc around the blanket with 3sc in each corner. Sl st to join.
2. ROW 2 – Repeat with color B.
3. ROW 3 – Repeat with color A.
4. ROW 4 – Repeat with color B.
5. ROW 5 – Repeat with color A.
6. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing the Double Crochet Blanket

You can add tassels to the corners. Read the how to make tassels tutorial. I used some of both colors in the tassels. I like how they weigh down the corners making it lay out nicely on my couch.

To make your blanket have straight edges, you will need to block it. This makes such a difference to the finished blanket and how it hangs. Read more about blocking crochet.

Just by varying the colors in the stripes, you can get so many variations from this one double crochet throw pattern. Each row of the granny clusters could be a different color for a rainbow throw. I enjoyed making this sample for the pattern as it was so easy but just had enough interesting details to look like a designer piece for your couch.
