Can you hear my stifled squeals over these free crochet doll patterns? Raise your crochet hooks, those of you who were obsessed with dolls back in the day. It won't be overstated to say dolls are childhood essentials and perfect heirlooms too, and more often than not, your child's favorite toy.

Crochet Doll Patterns Tutorial
Who am I kidding? Dolls are our favorites too. Little kids can have all the fun, from playing house to playing with pretend friends, to mimicking everyone else's behavior towards them, with their toy crochet doll.
Crochet dolls are super fun to make as you have so much under your control; the expression of your doll, the height, the hair, the skin tone, her dressing aesthetic - so exciting.
I have put together lots of interesting free crochet doll patterns that will give you all the inspiration you need, but you can always tweak them with a little personal touch.
How to Crochet a Doll (Amigurumi Dolls)
Crochet doll patterns are generally made with a single crochet stitch using amigurumi techniques. This results in dense crocheted fabric that can be filled without the stuffing poking out.
Parts like the head are crocheted in continuous rounds without needing to join each row. Bodies, legs, and arms are done as a tube.
While most of the doll's outfits are also made with a single crochet stitch, you could also use a half double crochet or double crochet, which would be faster.
Crochet Doll Patterns Supplies
- Crochet Hook - Doll patterns tend to use smaller hooks than recommended on the yarn label. This is in order to minimize holes and to create a dense fabric.
- Crochet Yarn - Most crochet doll patterns use a sport weight yarn (4 ply, category 2) with a 3 to 4 mm hook. DK yarn and worsted weight yarn are also used. Cotton yarn is often better than wool or acrylic as it is less fluffy and has a better stitch definition.
- Stitch Markers - These are used to mark the beginning of rounds as many crochet doll patterns are done in continuous rounds.
- Polyester Stuffing - You will need to stuff your doll. Look for polyester stuffing designed for toys.

Techniques Used to Make Crochet Doll Patterns
In order to make a crochet doll, there are a few techniques you will need to learn.
Single Crochet Increase
You can increase by crocheting 2 single crochet stitches into the one stitch below. This is the easiest way to increase single crochet.
Single Crochet Decrease
There are two ways to decrease single crochet. The easiest is to simply skip a stitch and work into the next stitch or chain below. This can leave a hole, however.
The other way is to single crochet 2 together.
- Insert your hook
- Yarn over and pull a loop (2 stitches on hook)
- Insert hook under next stitch, and pull a loop (3 stitches on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops (1 stitch on hook)
This will give you an invisible decrease.
Magic Ring
The magic ring is a technique used to start crocheting circles and for crochet balls in order to close the hole at the center.
Tips for Crochet Doll Patterns
- SIZE DOWN - Sizing down your crochet hook means you will have a tighter fabric where the stuffing will not poke through.
- MAGIC CIRCLES - Using magic circles means that the top of your doll heads will be tight without a hole.
- YARN CHOICE - Most patterns will specify a yarn weight or yarn ply but your choice of fiber is also important. Cotton yarns will ensure that the stitches are well defined and your facial features can shine through.
Free Crochet Doll Patterns – In Conclusion
Your childhood isn't complete without at least one doll. They are super fun to play with, and parents can use dolls to teach their kids how to handle someone fragile, especially if their child is soon going to be joined by another little cutie.
