How to Make a Doll Shirt
Supplies
- Light to medium weight stretch knit fabrics.
- I suggest you prewash your fabrics in case one shrinks more than the other. If you use a light-colored fabric make sure your contrast fabric is colorfast so it doesn’t run on the lighter fabric when you wash your pajamas.
Step 1 - Shoulder Seams
With the RIGHT sides together, stitch the FRONT to the BACKS at the shoulder seams.
Step 2 - Sleeve Hems
On the WRONG side of the top, fold the armhole edges over by ¼ inch (6mm) and stitch. Stitch using a zig-zag stitch catching in the raw edge.
Step 3- Neck
On the WRONG side of the top, fold the neck edges over by ¼ inch (6mm) and stitch. Stitch using a zig-zag stitch catching in the raw edge.
Step 4 - Center Back
On the WRONG side of the top, fold the center back edges over by ¼ inch (6mm) and stitch. Stitch using a zig-zag stitch catching in the raw edge.
Step 5 - Sides
With the RIGHT sides together, stitch the FRONT to the BACKS at the side seams.
Step 6 - Bottom Hem
On the WRONG side of the top, fold the bottom hem edge over by ¼ inch (6mm) and stitch. Stitch using a zig-zag stitch catching in the raw edge.
Step 7 - Velcro
Stitch your Velcro to the back of your top. Stitch the rough side to the outside of the left. Stitch the soft side to the inside of the right. Read more about sewing velcro.
Step 8 - Decorating
Gather down the center of the ruffle pieces. Stitch the chest ruffle (shorter one) in a ‘U’ shape in the position marked on your pattern piece. Stitch the longer ruffle from shoulder seam to shoulder seam on the neck edge.
OPTIONAL – decorate with beads or buttons. Make sure any trims are safe for the child who will be playing with the doll.
