Free V Stitch Scarf Crochet Pattern, Easy

This striped scarf combines the popular v-stitch and the easy double crochet stitch to create an attractive and colorful design. The V stitch scarf crochet pattern from Treasurie uses worsted weight yarn and is crocheted along the length so you have lovely straight edges. It is a beginner friendly project, since the v shapes are just double crochets separated by chains.

V Stitch Scarf Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

This v stitch scarf is one of my favorites due to the colorful stripes. It uses 4 colors, one for the main part and 3 for the stripes. You can make the stripes a similar tone as I did or use completely contrasting colors. It lends to so many options. The scarf fringing, of course, is optional, but I liked the way it looked as if it continued the stripes.

Supplies

For this free crochet pattern, you will need:

• Yarn: Worsted (10ply, category 4)435m/470y
• Crochet hook: 5 mm or hook to match gauge.
• Tapestry needle or yarn needle: For weaving ends.
• Scissors

I used All Seasons Half and Half in Grey and Paintbox Wool Mix Aran for the purple, red and pink. Any worsted yarn in acrylic, wool or wool blend is suitable. Try to choose a soft yarn with drape.

Skill Level

This v stitch scarf is rated as easy since it just uses double crochet stitches and chains.

Gauge

13 st and 14 rows of sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook. However, gauge is not important when crocheting a scarf.

V Stitch Scarf Dimensions and Resizing

After blocking, my double crochet v stitch scarf measured 65×8 inches (165x20cm).

This v stitch crochet scarf is so easy to tailor the size to your preference.

• LENGTH – You can adjust the length by changing the number of chains. Just make sure you use a multiple of 3.
• WIDTH – The width can easily be adjusted by changing the amount of rows.

V- Stitch Scarf Crochet Instructions

Row 1 (dc row)

1. Start with Color A (grey).
2. Chain 219 stitches (multiples of 3 plus 3 for turning)
3. Insert hook into 4^th chain from hook and dc.
4. Dc across row (240 stitches), turn.

Row 2 (dc Row)

1. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
2. Dc into next stitch, and across row. (Final stitch in 3^rd chain.)

Row 3 (v-stitch row)

1. Change to color B (red), turn.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), dc into next stitch, ch 1.
3. *Sk 2 stitches, (dc, ch1, dc) into next stitch. (This is a v-stitch.)
4. Repeat along row until last 4 stitches.
5. Ch1, sk 2, dc into last 2 stitches. (Final stitch in 3^rd chain.)

Row 4 (v-stitch row)

1. Change to color C (purple), turn.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), dc into next stitch, ch1.
3. * (dc, ch1, dc) into next ch-1 space.
4. Repeat along row until last v-stitch.
5. Ch1, dc into last 2 stitches. (Final stitch in 3^rd chain.)

Row 5 (v-stitch row)

1. Repeat row 4 with color D (pink).

Row 6 (dc row)

1. Change to color A (grey), turn.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), dc into next stitch, dc in ch-1 space.
3. *Dc into top of first dc of v-stitch, dc in ch-1 sp, dc into 2^nd dc of v-stitch.
4. Repeat from * across row til last v-stitch.
5. Dc into ch-1 sp, dc into last 2 stitches (Final stitch in 3^rd chain.)

Row 7 (dc row)

1. Continue color A (grey), turn.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc).
3. Dc into next stitch, and across row. (Final stitch in 3^rd chain.)

Row 8 to 17

1. Repeat the pattern from rows 3 to 7 two more times.
2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
3. To make your scarf look its best, you will need to block it. Read more about blocking crochet

Fringing

1. Cut 10 pieces of yarn 12 inches (30cm) long.
2. Fold them in half, creating a loop at the folded end.
3. Each fringe will be inserted into the treble crochet row.
4. Insert your crochet hook from back to front through the edge.
5. Hook the yarn loop with your crochet hook and pull it halfway through.
6. Open the loop with your fingers, then pull the loose ends of the yarn strands through the loop.
7. Pull tight to secure the fringe in place.
8. Trim evenly.
9. Repeat for next 9 fringes.
