Granny Stitch Cowl Crochet Pattern (FREE!)

This free granny stitch crochet cowl pattern uses simple double crochet cluster stitches. It is crocheted in the round and is the ideal first scarf project for beginner crocheters. Make it all the one color or change colors every couple of rows like I have in this sample. You can leave it plain or add a cute tie and pom pom feature.

Supplies

• 4 Colors Yarn: Worsted weight (10ply) or DK weight (8ply). Total 344 yards (315m)
• 2 Crochet hooks:  4mm for body and 5mm for foundation chain.
• Tapestry needle: Weaving ends

Substituting Worsted Weight Yarn –Use a 5mm hook (and 6mm for the foundation chain) and chain 81.

Skill Level

Beginner/Easy. All you need to be able to crochet is the double crochet stitch and a chain for starting.

Gauge (4×4 inch square)

Approx: 16 single crochets x 20 rows on 4 mm hook in DK yarn. However, the crochet gauge is not overly important for this pattern since it is a loose-fitting cowl.

Finished scarf circumference 24” x 10” height.” (63.5x25cm) when made in DK.

• dc = double crochet stitch
• ch = chain stitch
• sk = skip
• sl st = slip stitch

How to Crochet a Granny Cowl, Step by Step Instructions

Row 1 (Color 1)

1. Using the larger hook, chain 96. (If you want to adjust the length of your scarf ensure you have a multiple of 3.)(Chain 81 if substituting worsted.)
2. Change to smaller hook.
3. Join into a circle with a sl st. (Ensure the chain is not twisted.)
4. 2dc into the same stitch

• skip 2 stitches
• *3dc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches
• Repeat from * until back to beginning
• Slip stitch to join row.

Row 2 (Color 1 continued)

1. Sl st to next space. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
2. 2 dc into same stitch,
3. skip 2 stitches
4. *3dc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches
5. Repeat from * until back to beginning
6. Slip stitch to join row. Fasten off Color 1

Row 3 (Color 2)

1. Join new color in any space between the clusters.
2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc into same stitch, skip 2 stitches
3. *3dc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches
4. Repeat from * until back to beginning. Slip stitch to join row.

Row 4 (Color 2 continued)

Repeat row 2:

1. Sl st to next space. Ch 3 (counts as first dc)
2. 2 dc into same stitch,
3. skip 2 stitches
4. *3dc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches
5. Repeat from * until back to beginning
6. Slip stitch to join row. Fasten off Color 1

Rows 5-26

1. Repeat rows 3 and 4. You will change color every 2 rows.

Optional Tie

1. Chain 70 inches (174 cm). Check you are happy with this tie length and fasten off. Leave a long tail.
2. Thread long tail end through the yarn needle, weave the chain up and down through top gaps.
3. Trim the tails to 1 inch.
4. Make 2 pom poms. I used a pom pom maker.
5. Tie the end of the chain string around the center of the pom pom. Knot tightly. (For store bought pom poms, use the yarn needle to go through the center and tie tightly.)
6. Trim the end.
