Granny Stripe Beanie Pattern, Free

Granny stripes are one of my favorite crochet stitches. They look great and are so easy to do. For the crown of the beanie, you will use a granny circle increase pattern and then regular granny clusters for the straight part. The granny stripe beanie is finished with single crochet ribbing, which will keep it snuggly on your head.

Supplies

• Yarn: Worsted Weight #4 (10ply)
• Crochet hook: 5 mm (H-8) for body and 4.5mm for brim
• Tapestry needle: to weave ends.

For this granny stitch crochet beanie, I used Paintbox Wool Mix Aran, but you can use any worsted yarn.

Skill Level

This crochet granny stripe beanie pattern is rated as confident beginner/easy. You will only need to know double crochet and single crochet stitches.

Gauge

13 st and 7 rows of dc with a 5mm (H-8) hook. Crochet a test swatch to match the gauge for the best-fitting granny stitch hat.

Sizing

Adult women. Fits average female head 20-22”. The hat stretches to accommodate different head sizes.

Abbreviations

Pattern written in US terms.

• sc =single crochet
• dc = double crochet stitch
• sc blo = single crochet back loop only
• ch = chain stitch
• sp = space
• sl st = slip stitch

Pattern Notes

COLOR CHANGES –  Fasten off and join new color to a space. For same color in next round you do not need to fasten off, sl st to the next space.

Special Stitches- Single Crochet Back Loop Only (scblo)

This crochet granny stripes hat pattern will need single crochet back loop only.

1. Insert hook in back loop. (Look at the top of the stitch. You’ll see it has a V-shape composed of two loops – the front loop and the back loop.)
2. YO, pull through (2 loops on hook).
3. YO, pull the yarn through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

Free Granny Stripe Beanie Pattern, Instructions

Round 1 (Color A)

1. Use 5 mm hook. Make a magic circle or ch 4 and join with a sl st.
2. Ch3 (counts as dc stitch), dc, ch1.
3. (Dc 2, ch1) Repeat 5 times.
4. Join with sl st to the top of the ch3. 6 dc clusters and 6 ch-1 spaces

Round 2 (Color A)

1. Slip stitch to ch space.
2. Ch 3 (counts as dc stitch), dc, ch1, 2 dc, ch1.
3. (2 dc, ch1, 2dc, ch1) in next 5 ch-1 spaces.
4. Sl to top of the ch3 chain.
5. Fasten off. 12 ch-1 spaces

Round 3 (Color B)

1. Join new color in a ch-1 sp.
2. Ch 3 (counts as dc stich), 2 dc, ch1
3. (3dc, ch1) in next 11 spaces.
4. Sl to top of the ch3 chain. 12 dc3 clusters

Round 4 (Color B)

1. Slip stitch to a space.
2. Ch 3 (counts as dc stitch), 2dc, ch1.
3. (2 dc, ch1, 2dc, ch1) in next space.
4. *(3 dc, ch1) in next space, (2 dc, ch1, 2dc, ch1) in next space.
5. Repeat from *  4 more times.
6. Sl to top of the ch3 chain.
7. Fasten off. 18 ch-1 spaces

Round 5 (Color C)

1. Join new color in a space, ch 3 (counts as dc stich), 2 dc, ch1.
2. (3dc, ch1) in next 17 spaces.
3. Sl to top of the ch3 chain. 18 clusters

Round 6 (Color C)

1. Slip stitch to ch space.
2. Ch 3 (counts as dc stitch), 2dc, ch1.
3. (Dc 3, ch1) in next space, (2 dc, ch1, 2dc, ch1) in next space.
4. *(3 dc, ch1) in next 2 spaces, (2 dc, ch1, 2dc, ch1) in next space.
5. Repeat from *  4 more times
6. Sl to top of the ch3 chain.
7. Fasten off. 24 spaces

Round 7 to 12

1. Join new color D in a space, ch 3 (counts as dc stich), 2 dc.
2. (3dc) in next 23 spaces (note there are no ch-1 in between the clusters now)
3. Sl to top of the ch3 chain..
4. Continue in same color order (change color every 2 rows). 24 clusters

Round 13 (Color C)

1. Change to 4.5mm hook. Join brim color C to any stitch.
2. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc into each stitch.
3. Sl st to join. 72 stitches

Brim (Color C)

1. Ch 9. Sc into 2^nd stitch from hook (the 8^th chain)
2. Sc along chain.
3. Sl st into the sc in the band. Sl st into next stitch.
4. Sc blo into 8 stitches. Turn. Sc blo 8 stitches
5. Sl st into the sc in the band. Sl st into next stitch.
6. Repeat all around brim. Fasten off leaving long tail.
7. Use needle to whip stitch to join the edges.
8. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
