Yarn I Used for the Granny Triangle Shawl

I used 2 skeins of Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in color Pure and some pink scrap for the tassels. You can use any worsted weight yarn.

This is a self striping yarn making color choices extra easy. It is a 100% acrylic yarn that is really soft. It is thinner than many other worsted weight yarns but that doesn’t matter since you will crochet the shawl to size. This also means you could easily substitute a DK yarn also.

Sizing

The finished size if the granny triangle shawl is 48 W x 24 H inches (122×6 cm). This doesn’t include the tassels. You can easily adjust this by adding or subtracting rows. Due to the construction method, the width will always be double the height.

Using Self-Striping Yarns

Self-striping yarns are popular for their pre-dyed color transitions that create unique patterns effortlessly.

You can use the yarn as it comes off the skein for a natural, unpredictable look or separate the colors for greater control over the design.

I separated the colors to create a more deliberate pattern. Here’s how I placed them. Since every skein has different color ratios, you must vary the design slightly to use what you have.

For the first half of the shawl, try changing color every four rows. Then, look at what colors you have left and start varying the number of rows to accommodate.

Granny Triangle Shawl Instructions

Essentially this crochet shawl is just a giant crochet half granny square. Once you have done the first few rows, you just repeat the pattern until you get to your desired size.

Here is the written pattern:

Row 1

1. Chain 4, insert hook into first chain and dc2.
2. Ch 2, dc 3 into same place. Turn.

Row 2

1. Chain 3 (counts as dc), 2dc into first stitch.
2. In the ch-2 space, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) (Point of the shawl).
3. 3dc in the top of the ch-3. Turn.

Row 3

1. Chain 3 (counts as dc), 2dc into first stitch.
2. 3dc in next space.
3. In the ch-2 space, (3dc, ch2, 3dc).
4. 3dc in the next space.
5. 3dc in the top of the ch-3. Turn.

Row 4

1. Chain 3 (counts as dc), 2dc into first stitch.
2. 3dc in next 2 spaces.
3. In the ch-2 space, (3dc, ch2, 3dc).
4. 3dc in the next 2 spaces.
5. 3dc in the top of the ch-3. Turn.

All Rows

1. Repeat round 4. Each row will have one more space on the side in which you will place 3 dc.
2. Continue until wrap measures 48 W x 24 H inches (122×6 cm) or your desired size.

Granny Triangle Shawl Tassels

The tassels are optional of course but they do have the added benefit of giving the ends some weight. This makes it stay on your shoulders better.

Here is how you make the tassels.

1. Cut 40 pieces, 12 inches long (30cm).
2. Cut a piece of yarn 10 inches long (25cm). Use it to wrap around the center 2 times and knot tightly.
3. Fold the tassel in half. Cut another piece 12 inches (25cm). Use it to wrap around the head twice, 1 inch (2.5cm) from the top. Knot tightly.
4. Use a crochet hook to pull these ends inside the tassel.
5. Trim the ends, but not the top ties.
6. Use the long ties to knot to the shawl corners. Pull the ends though the tassel with a crochet hook.

Blocking
