The well-known Granny Square is a classic icon in crochet, and to combine that with another classic icon, the heart, is truly a way to create a crochet piece that will be loved by all! Here are two different ways how to make a heart granny square. We will make a solid granny square heart, and a traditional granny square heart pattern completely made up of granny clusters.

Decide which style you like the best, then make an heirloom baby blanket to show your love for a precious baby! Or make anything else you would like to add hearts to!
Supplies for Granny Square Heart Patterns
Here is what you need for a heart granny square
- Yarn of your choice - light to medium weight.
- Crochet hook which is suitable for that yarn.
- Scissors.
- Yarn needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
For these granny square heart samples, I used a DK (8ply) cotton yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. Normally you would use a 4mm hook for DK yarn but granny squares generally look better when they are slightly tighter.
If you are using a worsted weight yarn, try a 4.5mm to 5mm hook size.
Abbreviations
All instructions in this heart granny square pattern are written in US terms.
- ch =chain stitch
- sc = single crochet stitch
- hdc = half double crochet stitch
- dc = double crochet stitch
- tr = treble crochet stitch
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
Skill Level
Crochet heart granny squares are for beginner to intermediate crocheters. As long as you know how to make the basic crochet stitches listed in the abbreviations below, you will be be able to successfully make these patterns.
The style 2 - traditional granny heart square is slightly easier for beginners since it just uses a double crochet stitch.
Heart Granny Square Pattern, Step by Step Instructions
You may have found that you want to crochet an item with hearts on it but are not sure how to join those irregular shapes together. This is the perfect solution as it combines a heart into a square, which makes it really easy to put the shapes together, whatever it is you want to make.
2 Granny Square Heart Patterns:
This heart granny square pattern will give you instructions for making 2 styles
- Style 1 - Traditional and easy granny square heart pattern, great for confident beginners.
- Style 2 - Solid granny square without holes.
Style 1 - Easy Heart Granny Square
A third way to use crochet hearts is to make an Afghan rug using squares that have hearts at their center. There are many patterns and ways to do this, but I think the simplest is to make a granny square heart.
You will need 2 colors for your crochet heart granny square. I have chosen red and white.
Round 1: (Red)
- Start with the foundation ring of your choice.
- Ch 2, (counts as first dc), dc 2, ch1, (dc3 ch1) 3 times. Join round with a sl st.
Round 2: (Red) Center of the Square
- Ch2, dc 2 into first ch sp. Ch1. Dc 3 in next ch sp, ch2, dc 3 in same space, ch1.
- Repeat from 3 times.
- Dc 3 ch2 in first ch space.
- Join with a sl st. You have now created your corners for the granny square.
Round 3: (Red and White)
- (Continue red) Ch 2, dc 2 in first ch space. Ch2 dc 3 in same space. Ch1. Dc 3 in next ch space.
- (Change color - white) Ch1, dc 3 ch2, dc 3
- (Change color - red) Ch1, dc 3 in next ch space.
- (Change color - white) Ch1, dc3, ch2, dc 3 into next space.
- (Change color - red) Ch1 dc 3 into next space, ch1, dc 3 into next space, ch2, dc 3.
- (Change color - white) Ch1, dc 3 in last ch space. Join with a sl st.
Now the heart shape is forming. You will see that you are actually creating a conventional granny square, the stitches are exactly the same, but the color changes to form the heart shape.
Round 4: (White)
- (white) Ch2, dc 2 in first ch space, ch 1, dc 3 in next ch space, ch2, dc 3 in same space, ch1, dc 3 in next ch space. Repeat from * 3 times.
- Dc in next space, ch2, dc 3 in same space, ch1, dc3 in next space, ch1, join to first dc with sl st.
Your heart will have formed simply by changing colors! Now you can continue going around your square, just like a normal granny square, to make your motifs as big or small as you wish.
Join lots of these squares together to make an Afghan-style blanket, or make two large ones and join them together as a cushion.
Keep them small and join 2 into a ring to make a mug cozy.
Style 2 - Solid Granny Square Heart Pattern
Here is a solid style of granny square heart.
Foundation:
- Using color A, start with a magic ring, or work 4 chains and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1:
- Ch 3, work 15 tr into the ring,
- Ch3,
- Sl st into the ring.
Round 2:
- Ch 1, skip the first chain of round 1's first ch 3
- Sc in the first round's next two chains (i.e: ch 2 and 3).
- (hdc, dc) in the following chain, 2 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, hdc in the following 4 stitches,
- 3 dc in the next st (point at bottom),
- hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, (dc, hdc) in the next st, sc in each of the next 2 stitches,
- Skip the last stitch, sl st into the middle of the heart to close off the round.
Round 3:
If you work this round of your heart granny square too tightly, your heart shape will curl up. If you don’t like working loosely, change to a larger hook for this round.
- Ch1,
- Skip the first st, then work very loosely, sc in each stitch around.
- When you get to the 3 dc at the point of the heart, work 3 sc into central dc.
- Continue working sc into each st around, finishing with a sl st into the last stitch of the previous round and a sl st to join.
Round 4:
Change to color B.
- Begin at the central sc stitch of the 3 sc stitches worked at the point of the heart in Round 3. Join yarn with a sl st,
- Sc in next stitch, hdc in next (dc, trc) in next st.
- In next stitch work (2trc, ch1, 2trc) to create the corner,
- (tr, dc) into next st, 2 dc in next st, hdc into next 2 sts, sc into next st, 2 sc into next st.
- Second corner is made with (2 hdc, ch1, 2 hdc.) into one st.
- hdc into next st, sc into next st, 2 hdc into next st.
- Tr into the center top of heart. Insert your hook into round 2 when starting the tr.
You should now have formed the first half of your outer square. You will work the second half with the same sts in reverse!
- 2 hdc into next st, sc into next st, 2 sc into next st,
- In next stitch work (2 hdc.1 ch, 2 hdc) to form your third corner.
- 2 sc into next st, sc into next st.
- Hdc into next 2 sts. 2 dc into next st. (dc, tr) into following st.
- For your final corner work (2 tr, ch1, 2 tr)
- Then tr, dc into the next st, hdc into next st, sc into following st,
- sl st to finish round.
Round 5:
(Work this entire round in dc)
- Ch2, dc into sl st base
- Working (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc) into each chain 1 corner, dc in each st around
- To join, slip to the top of chain 2.
If you want to make larger squares, repeat this dc round until your square is the size you want.
Finishing
Finish off by cutting yarn and inserting it through your last loop, then weave in the ends.
Your heart granny square will have formed simply by changing colors! Now you can continue going around your square, just like a normal granny square, to make your motifs as big or small as you wish.
What Can I Make With Crochet Heart Granny Squares?
The most obvious choice is, of course, a blanket. But you could also use them to make lovely tote bags or even a scarf or shawl. I have seen hats made with granny squares, so a heart granny square would be even more special!
They would make charming pockets stitched onto a plain garment. Another idea is a really cute dog bed made up of heart squares to show your dog just how much you love him! A single square at a time would make a coaster, and a few stitched together would make a nice pot holder. Your imagination is the only limit here!
