Special Stitches

Crochet Hooded Cowl Written Pattern Instructions

This pattern starts by crocheting a rectangle of ribbing for the neck. You will then join it into a tube and start the hood. The hood is back and forth rows that are joined at the top. The finishing touch is a row of single crochet around the opening to neaten it up.

Neck Brim

1. Chain 22 (20+2).
2. Work 1 hdc into 3rd chain, hdc across the row, turn.
3. Ch 1(doesn’t count as stitch), hdc into base of chain.
4. Hdcblo until the last stitch, hdc into last stitch.
5. Repeat for 58 more rows. (Total rows is 60 or 30 ribs)
6. Slip stitch the short edges together to form a tube and turn right way out.

Hood

1. Use stitch markers to divide the top neck into 4. (One marker at seam).
2. Ch1, single crochet around top edge (72 stitches – 18 stitches between each stitch marker). Fasten off yarn.
3. Leave stitch marker at center front opposite the seam. Remove other 3.
4. Rejoin yarn 3 stitches from marker. (Do not count marker stitch)
5. Ch1, hdc around 65 stitches. (You will end 3 stitches from marker, not counting marker stitch.) This means you have a front opening of 7 sts.
6. *Turn, ch1, hdc around to end of hdc row. (65 stitches)
7. Repeat until you have 26 rows of hdc in total for head.
8. Turn wrong way out and stitch the top ends together with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave ends. Turn the right way out.

Finishing

1. Join yarn at top seam, ch1, sc around opening. Slip stitch to join.
2. Fasten off and weave ends. Fold back top of hood.

You can wear the hooded crochet cowl with the edge folded back or pulled right forward.
