How to Crochet a Beanie Under 2 Hours

These samples took me just over an hour, so I’ve doubled the time as I’m sure most of you have arrived here as beginner crocheters. As long as you know how to single crochet and double crochet, you will be good to start!

How to crochet a beanie quickly:

1. Crochet a shaped rectangle using ribbing to fit around your head. I will give you the pattern for 3 sizes so you can get a custom fit.
2. Fasten off and gather the top with a tapestry needle.
3. Fold the crochet beanie in half and sew up the sides.
4. Decorate with a pom pom

An Absolute Beginner Crochet Beanie Pattern

This beginner beanie pattern is made from a stretchy rectangle seamed together and gathered at the end. It really is a simple pattern. Don’t be put off by needing to crochet in the back loops – this is so easy – it is just a different place to insert the crochet hook. And, of course, I will lead you through the process step by step.

Supplies

• Yarn: Chunky #5 (12ply). No brim – 92m/100yds, with brim – 105m/115y
• Crochet hook: 6.5 mm (H-8)
• Tapestry needle: to weave ends.
• Scissors

I used Paintbox Chunky yarn to this basic beanie, but you can use any chunky yarn. It is a 100% acrylic yarn and was really soft and squishy to crochet with. As always, Paintbox has some of my favorite color options.

Other substitutions I have used include Brava Bulky (100% acrylic with a similar texture but slightly denser). Wool blends will keep your head even warmer in Winter.

Easy Crochet Beanie Pattern

Here are all the pattern notes you will need before you start crocheting the ribbed beanie pattern.

Skill Level – This is an easy beanie crochet pattern since it just uses single crochet and half double crochet stitches. This pattern uses simple techniques and basic stitches.

Gauge – 10 hdc stitches per 4” (10cm) with 6.5 mm hook. Crochet a test swatch to measure for the best fitting beanie. Adjust your crochet hook size or tension to match the gauge.

Options – You can make this easy crochet hat pattern with or without the folded brim. The lengths are 7”(18cm) for no brim or 9”(23cm) for folded brim.

Sizing of the Crochet Ribbed Beanie

Fits head circumference:

• Small Adult =  21”(53cm)
• Medium Adult = 22” (56cm)
• Large Adult = 23” (58.5cm)

Crochet Beanie, Step by Step Instructions

Abbreviations

Pattern written in US terms.

• sc =single crochet
• sc blo = single crochet backloop only
• hdc = half double crochet
• hdc blo = half double crochet back loop only
• ch = chain stitch
• sl st = slip stitch

Special Stitches Needed

This ribbed beanie crochet pattern uses scblo and hdcblo. These are the same as your regular single crochet and half double crochet stitches except where the hook is inserted.

Look at the top of the stitch. You’ll see it has a V-shape composed of two loops – the front loop and the back loop. Usually, you would insert the hook under both the loops. For back loop stitches, the hook inserts into the back loops only.

Row 1

1. Chain the number below for your style choice and size. This includes 2 chains extra for turning.

2. Insert hook into 3^rd chain and hdc across row until the last 8 chains.
3. In the last 8 chains, sc to end. Turn.
4. It can make it easier if you place a stitch marker at the beginning of those 8 sc stitches.

Row 2

2. *Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), scblo in first 8 stitches.
3. Hdcblo to last stitch. Hdc in last stitch. Turn.

Row 3

2. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), hdc.
3. Hdcblo across to last 8 stitches. Scblo in last 8 stitches.
4. Repeat from * until beanie measures across the bottom (note bottom is wider than top): (S= 20”, M = 21”, L = 22”)

Finishing and Gathering the Top

1. Double check that it fits comfortably around your head before you seam it up.
2. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
3. Thread the tail on a yarn needle and do small up and down stitches along the smaller edge (scblo end) to gather the top of the hat. Pull tight and fasten. If there is still a hole at the top, also do some stitches across.
4. Put the open side edges together and sew up the sides.

How to Decorate this Simple Beanie Pattern

Optional: Add a pom pom to the top of the finished hat. Learn how to make a pom pom or use a pom pom maker. I added a purchased faux fur pom pom. These usually have a little elastic loop at the bottom, so you can thread it through the hole at the top and then secure it by threading the yarn tail through a few times and knotting it off.
