Crochet Flowers Tutorial
For all these flowers which start with a ring, I have mentioned starting with a chain ring, but if you prefer, you can use a magic ring instead.
Method 1 - Very Easy Crochet Flower Pattern
This one looks good in 2 colors, one color for the center and the other for the petals. You will also need a crochet hook suitable for your choice of yarn, as well as a yarn needle and a pair of scissors.
Row 1:
- Using the color you have chosen for your center, chain 4.
- Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Row 2:
- Chain 2. (Counts as one hdc)
- Half double crochet (hdc) 11 times into the ring.
- Slip stitch to the top of the chain 2.
- Fasten off.
Row 3:
- Change colors to the color you have chosen for your petals. Join in new color with a slip stitch to the top of any hdc.
- *Chain 2.
- 3 double crochet (dc) into the next hdc.
- Slip stitch into next hdc.
- Repeat from* all the way around. (There should be 6 Petals.)
- Join up with a slip stitch.
- Fasten off and weave ends in.
Method 2 - Basic Lacy Crochet Flower Pattern
Foundation:
- Using the color for the center, chain 3.
- Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1:
- Chain 2 (Counts as first stitch),
- hdc into loop.
- Chain 1.
- *dc2tog,
- ch 1 into center ring.
- Repeat from * 4 more times around.
- Join with slip stitch into top of 1st chain 2.(You will have 6 dc2tog-clusters and 6 ch-1 spaces.)
Round 2:
- Change color with a slip stitch.
- Chain 1 (Counts as first sc)
- Chain 3.
- Sc in next ch-1 space.
- Chain 3.
- Repeat all the way around.
- Join with slip stitch into first ch-3 space. (You will have 6xch-3 spaces.)
Round 3:
- Chain 1 (Counts as first sc.)
- Work: {2 dc, 3tr, 2 dc, sc } into the same ch-3 space.
- {Sc, 2dc, 3tr, 2 dc, sc} into next ch-3 space.
- Repeat 4 more times to form 6 petals.
- Join with slip stitch into first chain.
- Fasten off.
- This flower looks just as good all done in one color, without the contrasting center.
Method 3 - Easy Crochet Rose - How to Crochet a 3D Flower
I think this one is my all-time favorite crochet flower! It stands up in gorgeous 3D detail and is not difficult to make. It is made by crocheting one long piece, then rolling it up and stitching it into place.
Foundation:
- Chain 58.
Row 1:
- Dc into 7th chain from hook.
- * Chain 2, skip 2.
- (dc, ch2, dc) into next chain.
- Repeat from * all the way across. (18 V-stitches.)
Row 2:
Work petals into V’s and sc into the stitch between the V’s.
- Chain 3, turn.
- 5dc in next 2 ch space.
- sc in next space.
- {6dc into next 2 ch sp, sc into next space} 5 times.
- 9 dc into next 2 ch sp, sc into next st, 6 times.
You can see how your work is curling up naturally. It is meant to do this!
- 10 tr into next 2 ch sp, sc in next st. Repeat to the end.
- Finish off your yarn, leave 6-10” for sewing rose together.
The petals will curl up naturally. Just roll up your petals into a nice rose shape, smaller petals in the center, larger petals on the outside. Stitch together at the base to make your flower secure. Be sure to stitch through all the layers, so that your rose doesn’t fall apart!
Method 4 - Puff Stitch Flower
Foundation:
- Make your foundation ring in the color you want for the center of your flower.
- Ch4, join with a sl st to make a ring.
Round 1:
- Ch 1, 12 sc into circle.
- sl st into 1st chain.
- Fasten off your yarn.
Round 2:
- Join new color, the color you want for your petals.
- * Ch3.
- (Yo, insert hook into same sp, yo, pull through, pull up to height of ch stitches.) twice.
- 5 loops on hook.
- (Yo , insert into same sp again, pull through to height of stitch) Twice more. 10 loops on hook. These loops must be loose.
- Yo and pull through all loops on hook.
- Ch2, sl st into next sp. *
- Repeat from * to * until you have 6 petals.
- Sl st into first petal, fasten off. Weave in ends, or leave a long tail for sewing flowers together, or for sewing it onto your item.
These flowers can be used singly or joined together by the petals to create a whole fabric of flowers.
Large Flower
This flower, made with DK yarn and a size 7 (4.5mm) hook, measures just 5 inches (12cm ) across. If you use finer yarn and hook, it will be smaller, or you can make each petal with fewer chains as a base. Just remember to adjust all your stitches accordingly if you do that!
Row 1:
- Start with a magic ring in the flower center color. (Or if you prefer, make a ring of 4 ch, joined with a sl st.)
- 6 sc into ring. Join with a sl st.
Row 2:
- 2 sc into each sc, join with a sl st.
Row 3 - First Petal:
- Change your yarn to the color you would like for your petals now.
- Work 16 ch. If you want smaller petals, use less ch. It should be an even number of ch.
- Sl st into the first sc from round 2. This will make a loop of ch.
- Turn and work back into your ch loop.
- Work 1sl st into each of next 3 ch.
- Work 4 sc , 1 into each of the next 4 ch.
- 2 sc into each of next 2 ch. You are turning the corner here, so need to add extra sts. You will have 4 sc in 2 ch sts.
- 4 sc into next 4 ch. (Working down the other side of the loop.)
- 3 sl st into last 3 ch.
Second Petal:
- Sl st into next sc from round 2.
- 16 ch. Sl st into same sc to make a loop again.
- Turn and work into ch loop.
- 1 sl st into each of next 3 ch.
- 4 sc into next 4 ch.
- 2 sc into each of next 2 ch.
- 4 sc into next 4 ch.
- 3 sl st into last 3 ch.
Remaining Petals:
- Repeat as for 2nd petal all the way around your sc circle. You should have 12 petals.
- Finish by joining the last petal with a sl st, end off your yarn, leaving a tail to stitch the flower to the headband.
- Weave in any remaining ends.
Crochet Leaves
You may want to have a couple of leaves to go along with your flowers. Here is a quick and easy leaf pattern for you! This just makes a simple, basic leaf shape, but is super quick and easy to do!
- Chain 8. Leave a long tail of yarn at the beginning, so you will have yarn to stitch your leaf down when it is ready.
- Work down the side of the chain. Insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook.
- Sl st, sc, hdc, dc into each chain stitch. (This increses height each time.)
- Tr 2, and then dc+dc+hdc all into the last chain.
- Continue on the other side of the chain.
- Hdc+dc+dc all into first chain.
- Tr 2, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, one into each of the rest of the ch.
- Fasten off, and weave in the end.
