Have you ever wondered how to crochet slippers? There is a multitude of patterns out there, but this one is super quick and easy! I am one of those people who always has cold feet, so these are perfect for me to pop onto my chilly toes while watching TV!

How to Crochet Slippers Tutorial for Beginners
This method of crocheting slippers is worked flat, so it's wonderfully easy to do for beginners. It uses half double crochet, which is substantial enough to make nice warm slippers but also works up nice and quickly. You will be using your own foot measurements, so they will be custom-made to fit you. Honestly, these slippers could not be easier, as they are made from two rectangles.
Supplies for Easy Crochet Slippers
- YARN - You can actually use any yarn because these are made to measure, but I would recommend a chunky/bulky yarn with a suitably thick crochet hook. This will make your slippers work up quickly, and will also make your feet nice and cozy! Worsted weight yarn is also popular for crochet slippers. You will need the main color for the slippers and a contrast color for the trim and the pom-pom.
- HOOK - Choose the crochet hook recommended for the yarn you have chosen. Your yarn label should specify what size to use. For a bulky yarn use a 6.5 mm hook.
- YARN or TAPESTRY NEEDLE - For making up the slippers as well as weaving in ends.
- SCISSORS
- MEASURING TOOLS - Measuring tape and ruler.
- OPTIONAL - Pom pom maker, or stiff card for making pom poms.
What kind of yarn to use for crochet slippers?
The best types of yarns for slippers are warm, soft and cozy. Look for wool or wool blend fibers. Sometimes the addition of some acrylic in can make the yarn softer.

The instructions for these crochet slipper socks have been written using US terms for crochet.

Gauge for this Easy Crochet Slipper Pattern
Gauge is not important here, as you will be working on measurements, rather than a specific number of stitches. This is why this crochet slipper pattern is one of the easiest you can make.
How to Crochet Slippers Step by Step Instructions
Here is the step by step crochet slipper pattern:
Step 1 - Take Your Foot Measurements
Measure the length and circumference of your foot for the crochet slippers.
- LENGTH - It is better to add a little extra (½ inch (12mm) is normally enough) to this measurement, both for comfort and because you will be gathering the toe of the slipper, so it will bunch up slightly.
- CIRCUMFERENCE - Measure the circumference of your foot - all the way around the widest part.
Once you have made yourself a pair of crochet slippers and seen how quick and easy these are to make, you will want to make slippers for your whole family! They make great gifts, and because they only take an hour or two to make, you can have a last-minute gift in almost no time at all!
If you are making them as a gift, and can’t measure the person’s foot to get the right size, here is a table of approximate sizes to use as a guideline. You will have to find out their shoe size, though!

Step 2 - Crochet Slippers from a Rectangle
You will now crochet a simple rectangle in half double crochet stitch.
- Foundation: Crochet a foundation chain equal to the length of your foot, plus a few extra stitches, see above, under measurements.
- Row 1: Ch3. First hdc into the 3rd chain. Work 1 hdc into each chain. Ch2, turn.
- Row 2: Work 1 hdc into each stitch from the previous row. Ch2, turn.
- Rows 3+: Repeat row 2 until your rectangle reaches the length you measured for the circumference of your foot. Finish off leaving a long tail to use for sewing the slipper together.
- Repeat: Make 2 rectangles in this manner.
You could substitute double crochet (dc) if you want a more open type of slipper.
How to Do Half Double Crochet Slipper
Here is a reminder on how to do half double crochet:
- Yarn over and insert the hook.
- Yarn over and pull through (3 loops on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops (1 loop on hook)
Step 3 - Construct the Crochet Slipper
Front of the Crochet Slipper
With your yarn needle, work a row of small running stitches (up and down stitches) across one short end of the rectangle.
Pull up the running stitches to gather this end. Secure the gathers with a backstitch. This will be the front part of your slipper.
Top of the Crochet Slippers
Sew the two sides of the long edge of your rectangle closed, leaving it about half-open. This will be the hole where you insert your foot.
Heel of the Slipper
Next, sew the other short side of the rectangle closed. This will form the heel of your slipper.
You will find that this forms a little point at the base of the heel. To get rid of that point, you will need to form a little triangle with that point and fold it up towards the back seam (Just as though you were wrapping a gift!), and stitch it into place along the back seam.
The basic shape of your slipper is now formed! Almost finished!
Step 4 - How to Crochet Slippers with Embellishments
Around the open section, where you insert your foot, join on the contrast yarn. Work one row of single crochet into each stitch around the opening. If you would like the slipper to hug your ankle a bit, you can work more rows of sc, but make sure that it is not too tight to insert your foot into!
End off with a slip stitch to join the circle, and then end off the yarn and weave in any loose ends.
Make your pom-pom, and stitch it onto the front of the slipper. If you have never made a pom-pom before, read my article on how to make a pom-pom.
Now make the second slipper in exactly the same way.
How to Crochet Slippers with Non-slip Soles
You will have a comfy, cozy pair of slippers to keep your feet warm! Slip them onto your feet and enjoy them, but don’t slip while wearing them!
Wait! What if I do slip while wearing them? Here are some possible solutions to making your crochet slippers non-slip.
- HOT GLUE: This is a quick and easy, inexpensive solution. Using your glue gun, apply some lines of hot glue to the soles of the slippers and allow them to dry. This will give them some grip. The disadvantage of this one is that it may peel off and need reapplying, or it may turn very hard and be uncomfortable to walk on.
- PUFF PAINT: This is easily available at most craft stores, and can also be applied as a few lines or swirls on the soles of the slippers. It dries softer than the hot glue but may also need reapplying after a few uses. Be sure to let the puff paint dry well for a day before you walk on it!
- SILICONE CAULK: You can apply this thickly all over the soles of your slippers. Use rubber gloves to spread it to coat the soles. You can even use your slippers outdoors if you choose this method, but it does remain quite tacky, even when dry. It definitely needs at least 24 hrs to dry before use.
- PLASTI-DIP: Plasti-dip is specially made to coat objects to make them non-slip, but it may be difficult to find and you will need multiple coats of it to be effective.
- SUEDE: This is a great solution to slippery soles; it looks good and feels comfortable. You can often buy a small sheet of suede at craft shops. The disadvantage is that it is fairly expensive! Should you choose this method, you will need to punch small holes into the suede to be able to sew it onto the soles. You can use an awl to do this or get a small leather hole punch.
Felt is often suggested, but it is often just as slippery as the crocheted soles. Not the best solution!
How to Crochet Slippers - In Conclusion
Make yourself a pair first, then when you have used your own pair as a practice round, you can start crocheting slippers for everyone! Do remember that, because they are so quick and easy to make, they are also wonderful to donate to charities such as homeless shelters, old age homes, or hospice organizations.
