How to Make Jelly Roll Fabric Strips
It is easy if you have lots of scraps and want to make your own jelly roll strips.
- Prewash your fabric first and iron it to remove wrinkles.
- Use a rotary cutter and cutting mat to cut 2.5-inch strips along the length of the fabric, perpendicular to the selvages. This means most strips will be 42-44 inches wide for quilting cotton.
- Trim the selvage ends.
- Press each strip in half and then roll them together.
- Secure the roll with a ribbon or strip of fabric.

How to Make a Jelly Roll Quilt
Making a jelly roll quilt is a fun and efficient way to create a quilt. Using pre-cut jelly roll strips (2.5 inches wide) simplifies the process, eliminating most of the cutting and allowing you to dive straight into piecing your quilt top.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a basic jelly roll quilt:
- Plan Your Design – You can randomly sew the strips or plan a specific design. Simple designs include chevrons, diamonds, or herringbone patterns.
- Sew the Strips – Take two strips and place them right sides together. Sew along one long edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Continue adding strips until you have a large panel of fabric. Press the seams. Trim the edges.
- Quilt Sandwich – Lay out your backing fabric on a large, flat surface, right side down. Layer the batting on top of the backing, then place your quilt top right side up on the batting. Make sure all layers are smooth and flat.
