• YARN: worsted weight yarn (10ply, category 4) in 5 colors. Approx 500m/547y.
• HOOK: 5 mm H-8.

Skill Level

This modern crochet scarf pattern is rated as easy for confident beginners. These squares are a variation of the traditional granny square.

Sizes

Each square 5.75” (14.5cm).

The length of the scarf will depend on how many squares you use.

• Medium 11 squares – 66×6”
• Long with 12 squares – 72×6”
• Extra Long 13 squares – 78×6”

Abbreviations

All crochet terms are in US terms.

• ch = chain stitch crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• dc = double crochet stitches
• tr = treble crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• YO = yarn over

Color Tips

This pattern is also suitable for using up scraps of yarn from other projects. Use the same color for the outside of all the squares in order to give a consistent look.

• Light Pink
• Medium Pink
• Red
• Cream for outside

Modern Crochet Scarf Pattern Instructions

You will need to make 14 squares for this scarf. It is up to you whether you do all the circles first or do the squares one at a time.

Round 1, Center

1. Start with a magic ring, or a slip knot and chain 5, and join into a ring with a slip stitch. Chain 3 (first dc)
2. Work 15 more double crochet into your ring.  
3. Join with a slip stitch at the top of the chain 3. (16 stitches).
4. Cut yarn, and fasten off.

Joining a New Color

1. Take your second color and tie a slip knot.
2. Remove it from the hook.
3. Insert the hook in one of the dc stitches of round 1.
4. Place the slip knot on the end of the hook and pull through.

Instead of facing all that weaving in at the end of the granny square, I would suggest weaving in your ends after you finish each round.

Round 2, Color 2

First Puff Stitch

IMPORTANT – The trick to doing a puff stitch is to keep all loops very loose.

1. Chain 2
2. YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO and pull through. (3 loops on hook)
3. YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO and pull through. (5 loops on hook)
4. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
5. Chain 1.

Next Puff Stitches

Now work puff stitch into each dc around the circle, separated by a chain.

1. YO, insert hook into next stitch, YO and pull through. (3 loops)
2. YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO and pull through. (5 loops)
3. YO, insert hook into same stitch, YO and pull through. (7 loops)
4. YO and draw the hook through all the loops on the hook. (1 loop)
5. Make a chain stitch. (This secures the puff stitch.)
6. Repeat for all the stitches around the circle. (16 puff  stitches total)
7. Join with slip stitch to first puff stitch.
8. Cut yarn, and fasten off.

Round 3, COLOR 3

1. Join new yarn into any chain 1 space.

First Cluster Stitch

1. Chain 3. (Ch3 is the first part of the first cluster only.)
2. *YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, pull up a loop. YO pull through 2 loops.
3. Repeat from * twice more. (4 loops on the hook.)
4. YO, pull through all 4 loops.
5. Chain 2.

Next Cluster Stitches

Work cluster stitch, chain 2 in the next chain space, and into each chain space all the way round.

1. *YO, insert hook into stitch, YO, pull up a loop. YO pull through 2 loops. (2 loops on hook). Repeat from * three more times. (5 loops)
2. YO, pull through all 5 loops.
3. Chain 2.
4. Repeat for all the chain spaces around the circle. (16 clusters)
5. Join with a slip stitch.
6. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Round 4, Outside Color

1. Join new yarn in any chain-2 space. Chain 4 (counts as the first treble stitch)
2. Crochet 2 trebles in the same space.

First Side:

• Crochet 3 dc in the next ch-2 space,
• Crochet 3 hdc in the next ch-2 space,
• Crochet 3 dc in the next ch-2 space.

First corner:

• 3 tr in the next ch-2 space.
• Chain 3. 3 tr in the same ch-2 space.

Now, repeat that side + corner pattern to make the other sides and corners.

Second side and corner:

1. 3 dc in the next space, 3 hdc in the next space, 3 dc in the next space.
2. Corner: (3 tr, chain 3, 3 tr) in the next ch-2 space.

Third side and corner:

1. 3 dc in the next space, 3 hdc in the next space, 3 dc in the next space.
2. Corner: (3 tr, chain 3, 3 tr) in the next ch-2 space.

Last side and corner:

1. 3 dc in the next space, 3 hdc in the next space, 3 dc in the next space.
2. Crochet 3 tr in the same space as the beginning treble stitches,
3. Ch 3, and join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning ch-4.

Round 5, Outside Color

1. Into the corner, you have just completed work ch3, and 2 dc.
2. *Into next space work 3 dc. Work 3 dc into each space along the side. (5 dc clusters)
3. Work 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc into the corner space.
4. Repeat from * all the way around until the last corner.
5. In the last corner, work 3 dc, ch2.
6. Finish with a slip stitch into the top of the first ch3.
7. Fasten off and weave in all the yarn tails.

Blocking

To make your scarf look its best, you will need to block the squares. This shapes and sets the scarf, smoothing out uneven stitches and defining the edge. Read more about blocking crochet

Repeat

Make a total of 13 squares for your scarf.

Joining the squares

1. Arrange your squares in the order you like.
2. Place 2 squares wrong sides together the stitch across with a single crochet into both tops loops. Open up the squares.
3. Repeat to sew all the squares in a row.
4. Weave in all ends.

Border

1. Join the border color (pink) and sc around the edge. 3sc into the corners.
2. Sl st to join and fasten off.
3. Block scarf.

Finishing

Decorate the short edges with small pom-poms. I used store bought ones and sewed them to the edge. Make sure the needles goes through the center of the pom pom a few times.
