Peacock Chunky Cowl Crochet Pattern (+ VIDEO)

Since this cowl crochet pattern uses super bulky yarn, you can make it up in a few hours or less. There are only 10 rows! You can adjust the height if you want it shorter or longer and choose to wear it with the scallops on the top or bottom. There are so many options for a simple cowl pattern.

You will crochet this cowl in the round, so there is no seaming to do at the end. This chunky crochet cowl pattern uses a variation of the peacock stitch.

Supplies

• Yarn: Super Bulky/Super Chunky (16ply, category 6), 90m/100y
• Crochet hook: 9mm or hook to match gauge.
• Tapestry needle: For weaving ends.

What Yarn I Used

I used 1 skein of Lion Band Wool Ease Thick and Quick in color Rouge. This yarn is lovely and soft and easy to crochet with. One of the reasons it is my favorite super bulky yarn is the amazing amount of colors available. I also prefer wool blends as they are extra warm and feel nice on your hands to crochet.

Any super bulky yarn is suitable, and many substitutes are available.

Skill Level

This is an easy pattern that just uses double crochet and single crochet stitches. If you are a confident beginner you should be able to tackle this easily.

Gauge (4 x 4 “ Swatch)

6.6 st x 8 r in single crochet with a 9mm hook.

Dimensions

The finished size of the crochet cowl is 24×9 inches (61x23cm).

You can adjust the width with the number of chains and the height by the number of rows.

Peacock Chunky Cowl – Free Crochet Pattern

Here are the step by step written and video instructions for the Peacock chunky cowl crochet pattern:

Round 1

1. Chain 48 (or multiple of 6).
2. Use a sl st to join the chain and create a loop. (Ensure that the chain is not twisted.)
3. Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch) and sc into each chain around the loop.
4. Sl st to join.

Round 2 (Fan Shape)

1. Ch 1(does not count as a stitch), Sc into base of chain, skip 2 stitches.
2. *5 dc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches, sc into next stitch, skip 2 stitches.
3. Repeat from * around the cowl.
4. Join round with a sl st.

Round 3 (Chains)

1. Ch 3 (count as first dc stitch), dc into base of chain, chain 2.
2. *Sc into 3^rd dc of the fan (this is the middle).
3. Chain 2, 2 dc into the sc stitch from the row below, chain 2.
4. Repeat from * around the cowl.
5. Join round with a sl st.

Rounds 4 to 10

1. Rows 4-9 – Repeat rows 2 and 3, three more times.
2. Row 10 – End on a round 2 fan row.

You can try the cowl on and add extra rows if you wish. I like my cowls to come up to my chin, but softer yarns will slouch down more and might need more rows. Just remember to end on a scalloped row for a pretty edge.
