Supplies

• Worsted weight yarn (10ply) #4. Approximately 160 m (175y)
• 5 mm (H-8) and 5.5 mm hooks
• Optional – faux fur pom-pom
• Tapestry needle – to weave ends.

For this crochet beanie with stripes, I used Red Heart Retro Stripes and Red Heart All Saver, but you can use any worsted yarn. Don’t forget to match the gauge. For the Retro stripes, I separated the colors so I could have a different color for each round. There was plenty of yarn left to make a second beanie too. I also omitted yellow as it is my least favorite color.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Back Loop Only (scblo)

1. Insert hook in back loop. (Look at the top of the stitch. You’ll see it has a V-shape composed of two loops – the front loop and the back loop.)
2. YO, pull through (2 loops on hook).
3. YO, pull the yarn through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog)

1. YO, insert hook into the first stitch, YO and pull through (3 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (2 loops).
2. YO, insert hook into the next stitch, YO, pull through. (4 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (3 loops), YO and pull through 3 loops (1 loop).

Rainbow Beanie Written Instructions

Brim

1. With color A, chain 9 (8+1) with the 5 mm hook.
2. Work 1 sc into 2nd chain, sc across the row, turn.
3. Ch 1, sc into base of chain. Scblo until the last stitch, sc into last stitch.
4. Repeat for 70 more rows. (Total rows is 72 or 36 ribs). Try it around your head and adjust rows if necessary.
5. Slip stitch or whip stitch the edges together and turn right way out.
6. Change to 5.5 mm hook. Ch1, sc into the side of each row (72 stitches).
7. Slip stitch to join.

Row 1 (Chains)

1. Continue with color A. Chain 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc.
2. *Ch2, skip 2 chains, sc into next chain.
3. Repeat from * to the last stitch.
4. End with ch2 and slip stitch to join row. (24 chain 2 spaces)

Row 2 (Clusters)

1. Join in your new color in any chain-2 space.
2. Ch3 (This counts as 1 dc), 2dc into the same space.
3. Work 3 dc into the next chain-2 space, and into each space along the row. 
4. Slip stitch to join row. Fasten off.

Row 3 (Chains)

1. Join color A in any space between the 3dc clusters.
2. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc.
3. * Ch2, sc into space between next clusters.
4. Repeat from * to end of row.
5. End with a ch2 and slip stitch to join row.

Row 4-10

1. Alternate rows 2 and 3. End on row 10 which is a cluster row.

Row 11 (Top)

1. Join color A in top of any stitch. Change to smaller hook 5 mm.
2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next stitch, dc2tog.
3. *Dc in next 2 stitches, dc2tog. Repeat from * around beanie.
4. Sl st to join round. (54 stitches)

Row 12 (Top)

1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc2tog.
2. *Dc in next stitch, dc2tog. Repeat from * around beanie.
3. Sl st to join round. (36 stitches). Fasten off leaving long tail.

Finishing the Stripe Crochet Beanie

1. Thread a yarn needle and do a small up and down stitch (running stitch) all the way around the edge.
2. Pull tight to gather.
3. Stitch across the top a couple of times to further secure.
4. Bring the yarn to the inside of the beanie and fasten off. Do not cut yarn if you want to add a pom-pom.
