Free Ribbed Scarf Crochet Pattern, Beginner Friendly

If you love the look of ribbing, this ribbed scarf crochet pattern is for you! It looks so similar to a knitted rib but is done with crochet using the half double crochet stitch. You can make this easy rib crochet scarf if you know your basic crochet stitches.

Ribbed Scarf Crochet Pattern Tutorial

I have made this ribbed crochet scarf with a super bulky yarn. It made up quickly, which beginners love, but the technique can be used on any yarn weight and type.

Another easy scarf to make is a rib-stitch scarf. This technique gives your scarf a beautiful texture similar to that achieved with knitting.

If you have been looking at various beginner scarf patterns, you may notice that many of them work side to side across short rows. In contrast, you will crochet a ribbed scarf lengthwise. This results in beautiful, even, and smooth edges, which will make the scarf look professional.

Ribbed crochet scarfs are extra stretchy across their width, which makes them drape beautifully and reduces some bulk. Best of all, they are a wonderful crochet scarf pattern for the whole family.

This crochet scarf just took me a few hours, so even if you are slower, you will have a new scarf in a relatively short amount of time. When you are just starting out crocheting, quick projects are the most satisfying.

Supplies

1. Super Bulky Yarn (category #6, 16ply) in wool, wool blend or acrylic.
2. Crochet Hook – 9 mm hook (N-13)
3. Crochet Basics – Tapestry needle or yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape

What Yarn I Used

For this ribbed scarf crochet pattern, I used just under 3 skeins, approximately (220m/242y) of Lionbrand Hometown yarn in Athens Blue Sky for the blue ribbed crochet scarf. It didn’t use all of the 3rd skein, so if you want a thinner scarf, go ahead and just buy 2.

This yarn is so soft and easy to crochet. It is 100% acrylic and, best of all, machine washable, which is important for winter items you will wear repeatedly.

If you are not sure which super bulky yarn to buy, here are some other suggestions:

Gauge

This yarn has a 6.6 stitch x 8 row single crochet gauge on a 9 mm crochet hook.

Gauge is not overly important for scarves. The ribbing pulls the stitches in much tighter, so the row count is inaccurate for the finished scarf.

Scarf Size

This ribbed crochet scarf pattern will give you a scarf 65 inches (165 cm) long. The width is a little harder to measure since the ribbing stretches, but is approximately 10 inches (25cm)

Adjusting Sizing

You can use any weight yarn and adjust the length by changing the number of starting chains. The width is easily adjusted by adding or subtracting rows. If you adjust the rows, make them an even number.

Stitches Used

This free crochet pattern uses the half double crochet stitch. In case you need a refresher, here are the steps:

Half Double Crochet

1. Yarn over and insert hook.
2. Yarn over and pull through (3 loops on hook)
3. Yarn over
4. Pull through 3 loops (1 loop on hook)

Half Double Crochet Back Loop Only (hdc blo)

This pattern uses a hdcblo which is the same as a regular half double crochet except you will insert your hook into the back loop of the row below.

Normally, you would go through both loops, but going through the back loop only creates a ribbed effect.

You can see the photo below, the back loops are where I have inserted the pink hook.

Abbreviations

This ribbed scarf crochet pattern uses US terms. Since this is a beginner pattern, I have only used the following 2 abbreviations. Everything else is written out in full.

• HDC = half double crochet
• HDCBLO = half double crochet back loop only

How to Crochet a Scarf with Ribbing

Here is an easy crochet scarf pattern with ribbing:

Foundation:

1. Crochet 110 chain stitches (108 + 2 for turning).
2. Place the foundation chain around your neck and check it feels the right length. Use the ribbed scarf crochet chain calculator above to adjust the length if necessary.

Row 1:

• Half double crochet in the 3rd stitch from the hook.
• Half double crochet all the way across the first row.

Row 2:

1. Chain 1. (This does not count as a stitch). Hdc into the base of the chain.
2. Hdcblo across the rest of the row below. Remember, it is just the same as your regular half double crochet, except the hook will be inserted into the back loop instead of through both loops.

Row 3 and Beyond

Continue crocheting the half-double crochets into the back loops until the scarf is your desired width. I did 12 rows.

Finishing the Ribbed Scarf Crochet Pattern

• Fasten off when you are happy with the width and weave in the ends.
• You can add tassels or pom poms to personalize the scarf further.
