It is free pattern time again! This month I have a free girls skirt pattern with a rabbit applique. The pattern comes with 3 sizes of rabbits so you can mix and match to create your own original skirt. You can also use this pattern as a base and make plain skirts or add decorations like ric rac or pom pom trim.

Skirts are so versatile!  Dress them up, dress them down, and wear them with tights on chilly days or over a swimming costume as you rush out to the beach.

Elasticated skirts are perfect for all sorts of waist sizes and girls can dress themselves as they pull on or pull off the skirt. Now add the gorgeous rabbit applique and you have a really cute little motif to decorate the skirt.  This is an easy starter project and a includes free pattern too. Girls will just love this skirt to the moon and back.

Printing and Assembling Pattern Pieces

When printing your pattern pieces, make sure that your printer's “page scaling” is set to “none” and “auto center and rotate” is checked.

The pattern pieces print on 8.5” x 11”(letter) or A4 paper.  You can check your pattern has printed in the correct size by measuring the 2 inch (5cm) test square.

Free Girls Skirt Pattern - Sizes Included

This free girls skirt pattern comes in girls sizes 1 to 8. If you are unsure which size to make, please use the sizing chart below. I have just put the hip size since the waist can easily be adjusted with the elastic lengths.

Suggested Fabrics

Make this free girls skirt pattern from light to medium-weight, non-stretch washable fabrics. Cotton or cotton blends will work best.

Extra Supplies Needed

  • INTERFACING - Double-sided fusible interfacing for the applique rabbits
  • ELASTIC - ¾ inch (2cm) wide elastic for the waist.
    • Measure your little girl's waist and cut the elastic one inch larger. For example for a 22 inch (56cm) waist cut the elastic 23 inches (58.5cm).
    • If you can’t measure your little girl then use this as a cutting guide.

General Notes

  • All seam allowances are ½ inch (12mm) and the seam allowances are included in the pattern.

Note about the applique

I have used 3 rabbits but you can mix and match the sizes and the numbers of rabbits you use to create a unique piece. Your pattern includes 4 sizes of rabbits.

Step 1 - Applique

Cut out appliqué fusible webbing (interfacing) to match your rabbit size. Press one side of the fusible interfacing to the WRONG side of the fabric according to the manufacturer’s directions. Draw around the pattern and cut the piece out.

Peel off the backing of the fusible interfacing. Place your rabbits on the skirt where you desire and press as per the manufacturer’s directions. Important: Make sure the rabbits are at least 2 inches (5cm) from the bottom, sides or top raw edges of the skirt.

Stitch around your rabbits with a zig-zag stitch. Tip: if you have a fabric that doesn’t fray much you could straight stitch instead. For the rabbit's eye put your machine on a zig-zag stitch with a zero-length stitch.
