Sizing
This free girls skirt pattern comes in girls sizes 1 to 8. If you are unsure which size to make, please use the sizing chart below. I have just put the hip size since the waist can easily be adjusted with the elastic lengths.

Supplies
Choosing the right fabric can make a big difference in how your skirt looks and feels. Lightweight cotton creates a soft, everyday skirt, while slightly heavier fabrics can add structure and volume. Avoid very thick or stiff fabrics, as they can make the gathers bulky and harder to sew neatly.
- FABRIC – Make this free girls skirt pattern from light to medium-weight, non-stretch washable fabrics. Cotton or cotton blends will work best.
- INTERFACING – Double-sided fusible interfacing for the applique rabbits
- ELASTIC – ¾ inch (2cm) wide elastic for the waist. Measure your little girl’s waist and cut the elastic one inch larger. For example for a 22 inch (56cm) waist measurement cut the elastic 23 inches (58.5cm). If you can’t measure your little girl then use this as a cutting guide.
- BASIC SEWING SUPPLIES – Sewing machine, thread, pins, scissors or rotary cutter and mat, measuring tape or ruler.
The fabric requirements provided are for 44 inch (112cm) wide fabric.
Pattern Notes
- All seam allowances are ½ inch (12mm) and the seam allowances are included in the pattern.
- I have used 3 rabbits but you can mix and match the sizes and the numbers of rabbits you use to create a unique piece. Your pattern includes 4 rabbit sizes.

Step 1 – Applique
Cut out appliqué fusible webbing (interfacing) to match your rabbit size. Press one side of the fusible interfacing to the WRONG side of the fabric according to the manufacturer’s directions. Draw around the pattern and cut the piece out.
Peel off the backing of the fusible interfacing. Place your rabbits on the skirt where you desire and press as per the manufacturer’s directions.
Important: Make sure the rabbits are at least 2 inches (5cm) from the bottom, sides, or top raw edges of the skirt.
Stitch around your rabbits with a zig-zag stitch. For the rabbit’s eye put your machine on a zig-zag stitch with a zero-length stitch.
Tip: if you have a fabric that doesn’t fray much, you could straight stitch instead.Â
This is what you will have so far on your front skirt piece.
Step 2 – Side Seams
With RIGHT sides together stitch the FRONT to the BACK at the side seams. Finish the side seams with either a serger, zig-zag stitch, or pinking shears. Press the seams.
Step 3 – Sew the Casing
With the SKIRT the WRONG way out – Press over the upper raw edge on the top of the skirt by 1/4 inch (6mm). Press over the casing again by 1 inch (2.5cm). Then stitch close to the edge, leaving a 1-inch (2.5cm) gap at the back.
Step 4 – Sew the Hem
To form the bottom hem – On the WRONG side of the SKIRT, press the bottom raw bottom edge up 1/4 inch. (6mm). Press the hem up 1/2 inch (12mm) again. Then stitch the hem close to the upper folded edge.
Step 5 – Elastic Waistband
Attach one end of the elastic to a safety pin and thread it through the gap in the top casing. Stitch the ends of the elastic together 1/2 inch (12mm) from the ends. Distribute the gathers evenly and pull the ends of the elastic inside the casing so they are hidden. Stitch the gap closed.
Add a ribbon bow to the front center of the skirt.

One common mistake is cutting fabric inaccurately, which can result in uneven seams or a poor fit. Taking the time to measure and cut carefully will significantly improve the final result.
Another issue is pulling the elastic too tight or too loose. If the elastic is too tight, the skirt may be uncomfortable, while too loose can cause it to slip down. Always test the fit before final stitching.
Skipping pressing steps can also affect the finish. Pressing seams and hems as you go ensures a more professional-looking skirt.
