Star Granny Squares (Free Pattern)
Would you like to add some cosmic flair to your crochet creations? In this article, you will learn how to make star granny squares. This is an unusual design which can be used in many ways. Its blend of simplicity and beauty makes it a great choice for anything, from scarves and blankets to decorative pieces for pillows, bags, or clothing.

Star Granny Squares Pattern Tutorial
For this granny square star pattern, you will start with crocheting a star and then add stitches to form a pentagon, before turning it into a square. I have used three colors but you could do the background in all the same color to highlight the star.
Supplies:
- YARN – Any yarn can be used. You will need one color for the star(Color A) and another color for the background. (Color B)
- HOOK – Crochet hook suitable for the yarn you have chosen.
- Scissors.
- Yarn needle for weaving in loose ends.
I used Paintbox Aran cotton yarn with a 4.5mm hook. The range of colors is amazing and they had so many shades of blue to choose from.
Difficulty level:
Easy, as long as you know how to crochet the stitches in the abbreviations below! You will learn to make the star shape first, then add in the background to make the star granny square. This free crochet pattern is best suited to intermediate crocheters or confident beginners.

Abbreviations:
All instructions are written in US terms:
- ch = chain stitch
- dc = double crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- sk = skip
- ch sp = chain space
- tr3tog = treble crochet 3 together.
- BLO = back loop only
To work the tr3tog:
- Wrap yarn over hook twice
- Insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through two loops with the crochet hook.
- Repeat Step 3.
- Repeat steps 1–4.
- You should have four loops on your crochet hook.
- Yarn over. Pull through all of the loops on the crochet hook.
Star Granny Squares Pattern
First, create the star shape:
Round 1 – Star, Color A Yellow
- Use color A, the color you have chosen for your star.
- Ch 3, sl st to close the ring or use a magic circle.
- 3 dc (counts as first stitch), dc 14 into the ring and sl st to close the round. (15 stitches).
Round 2 – Star, Color A Yellow
- Ch 1, sc 1 in the same place as sl st.
- *Ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 tr in next ch, 1 tr in the side of base sc, sk 2 st from previous round, 1 sc in next stitch.
- Repeat from * 4 times, skipping last sc of last repeat, sl st in 1st st.
- Fasten off and cut the yarn.
You can use this star by itself as an appliqué if you wish!

Round 3 – Background, Color B Turquoise
Now work the ‘Granny Square’ part:
You may find this a little disconcerting, because the corners of the square don’t line up with the points of the star! But it does work out eventually!
- Use color B (the background color) to form a crochet slip knot. Find the sl st from the star’s sharp end.
- *Sl st into sl st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, tr3tog into next 3 sts.

- Tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st.
- Repeat from * 4 times.
- Sl st into first st. (50 stitches)

Round 4 – Background, Color B Turquoise
- *Sc 1 into next 2 stitches.
- 1 hdc into next 2 stitches.
- 1 dc into next 2 stitches
- 1 tr into the next stitch, ch 2, 1 tr into the next stitch.
- 1 dc into next 2 stitches.
- 1 hdc into next 2 stitches.
- Repeat from * three times.
- Sl st in the first stitch.
Note: The last stitch of the last repeat will be a single hdc stitch.

Round 5 – Background, Color C Blue
This is the square’s border. In this round, you can retain your background ‘sky’ color, or you can change it if you would like a different color border.
- Dc into each stitch all the way around.
- [2 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in each corner.
- Join with a sl st and fasten off your yarn.
- Weave in the ends and crochet block the square.
Note that these squares will need blocking to even them out into a perfect square shape.
