Gauge

Make a swatch and measure that there is 13 st and 14 rows of sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook in a 4 inch (10cm) square.

What You Will Need

You will need the following supplies to crochet your stripey beanie:

• Worsted weight yarn (10ply) #4. Approximately 160 m (175y)
• 4.5mm and 5mm hooks
• Tapestry needle for weaving ends
• Optional – faux fur pom-pom

I used Paintbox Wool Mix Aran for my purple sample. This is one of my favorite wool mix yarns and the color range is fabulous. I’ve used this yarn in quite a lot of my crochet projects.

You can use any worsted-weight yarn that matches the gauge. Red Heart Super Saver is a good substitute for inexpensive acrylic yarn, as are Brava worsted, Premiere Anti-Pilling, and Basix.

• dc2tog = double crochet 2 together

Special Stitches

This striped beanie crochet pattern only uses single and double crochet stitches, however you will need to do a version of them.

Single crochet back loop only

This is used for the brim.

1. Insert hook in back loop. (Look at the top of the stitch. You’ll see it has a V-shape composed of two loops – the front loop and the back loop.)
2. YO, pull through (2 loops on hook).
3. YO, pull the yarn through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog)

This is used for decreasing at the top of the crown.

1. YO, insert hook into the first stitch, YO and pull through (3 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (2 loops).
2. YO, insert hook into the next stitch, YO, pull through. (4 loops). YO and pull through 2 loops (3 loops), YO and pull through 3 loops (1 loop).

Free Striped Beanie Crochet Pattern Instructions

Here are the written instructions for the crochet beanie.

Brim Color A

1. With color A, chain [12 for child or 15 for adult] with the 4.5mm hook.
2. Work 1 sc into 2nd chain, sc across the row, turn.
3. Ch 1, sc into base of chain. Scblo until the last stitch, sc into last stitch.
4. Repeat until you have the following number of rows. (You can easily count rows by counting the number of ribs – each rib is 2 rows)

5. Slip stitch the edges together and turn them out the right way.
6.  Change to a 5 mm hook.
7. Ch1, sc into the side of each row. (You will have the same number of stitches as rows). Sl st to join row.

Row 1 (Double Crochet) Color B

1. Turn brim to right side. Change to color B.
2. Chain 3 (counts as first dc), dc around row.
3. Slip stitch into 3^rd chain to join.

Row 2 (Sc) Color A

1. Change to color A.
2. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc around row. Sl St to join.

Straight Rows

Here we will do stripes up the straight part of the beanie.

1. Alternate rows 1 and 2 so you have the number of rows below. Remember, we have already crocheted 2 rows!

Finishing

1. Fasten off leaving a long thread.
2. Thread a yarn needle and do a small up and down stitch (running stitch) all the way around the edge. Pull tight to gather.

Attaching the Faux Fur Pom Pom

There are 2 main types of faux fur pom poms – with a snap attached, or with an elastic loop. Here is how to join each of these to your striped crochet beanie.

Pom Pom with a Snap

1. Purchase a faux fur pompom with a snap already sewn on.
2. Sew the flat part of the snap button securely to the top of your beanie.
3. Snap the pom-pom onto the base.

Pom Pom with Elastic Loop

1. Sew a Button on the inside of the beanie, just off center.
2. Use a crochet hook to pull the elastic loop through the center top.
3.  From the inside of the hat, loop the elastic around the button.
