This free crochet pattern uses the popular and very textured crochet waffle stitch pattern. This stitch is particularly well suited to dishcloths, as its design is highly absorbent and dries quickly, as the raised squares allow the air to flow more freely. And if you want a dishcloth with texture, then this pattern is for you!

Supplies

• Yarn: Worsted weight (10ply) #4 cotton
• Crochet hook: 5 mm (H-8)
• Tapestry needle: For weaving ends.

I used Paintbox Aran cotton yarn for the samples for this free crochet dishcloth pattern. This brand of cotton yarn comes in the most beautiful colors.

It is important to use cotton yarn so your dishcloth will be absorbent. Acrylic and synthetic yarns won’t absorb water, so are better kept for other crochet projects. After you wash your dishcloth the first time, the cotton yarn will probably shrink just a little and the stitches will tighten further which looks great.

You can easily substitute a DK (8ply) yarn with a 4mm hook for this pattern if you like a finer look.

Skill Level

This is an easy crochet dishcloth pattern, perfect for beginners. You will mainly use the double crochet stitch, one of the six basic crochet stitches. It uses regular dc and the front post version. Don’t worry it really is easy! There is just a difference in where to place your hook.

Dimensions

Gauge is not important for this waffle stitch dishcloth pattern. The size of my sample is approximately 7 x 7 inches (18x18cm). You can easily adjust the size but changing the length or the number of chains in the foundation.

Abbreviations

• sc =single crochet
• dc = double crochet stitch
• fpdc = front post double crochet
• ch = chain stitch
• sl st = slip stitch

Special Stitches (fpdc)

This waffle stitch dishcloth will use regular and front post double crochets. For front post double crochet, insert the hook into the long bar of the stitch below. Other than the hook insertion, it is just like a regular double crochet.

1. Yarnover
2. Insert hook – Instead of inserting your hook into the top two loops, you’ll insert your hook around the post of the stitch in the row below.
3. Yarn over again, pull through.(3 loops on your hook.)
4. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on your hook. (2 loops left on your hook.)
5. Yarn over once more and pull through the remaining two loops. This completes your double crochet front post stitch.

Waffle Dishcloth Crochet Pattern, Step by Step Instructions

Here is how to make the crochet waffle stitch dishcloth:

Row 1

1. Chain 29 (The starting chain should be a multiple of 3 plus 2 extra chains).
2. Insert hook into the 4^th chain from the hook and dc.
3.  Dc into each chain across the row.
4. Turn.

Row 2

1. Chain 2 (counts as first dc).
2. * Fpdc into next stitch, dc into the next 2 stitches.
3. Repeat from * until the last 2 stitches.
4. Fpdc into the next stitch, dc into the top of the turning chain.
5. Turn.

Row 3

1. Chain 2 (counts as first dc), dc in the next stitch.
2. *Fpdc around next 2 stitches, dc in next stitch. (You will be doing the dc into the top of the fpdc of the previous row. The fpdc will be into the dc of the previous row. In other words, you will do the opposite to row 2.)
3. Repeat from *to the last 2 stitches.
4. Dc in next st, dc in top of turning chain.
5. Turn. You will now see the waffle starting.

Rows 4 to 14

1. Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your waffle stitch dishcloth has reached the required length. I crocheted 14 rows total to form a square.

Border for Waffle Stitch Dishcloth

Adding a border will give more structure to your dishcloth and even out the edges.

1. *Ch1, sc round the edge with 3sc into the corners. Slip stitch to join.
2. Repeat from * 1 more time.

Hanging Loop (optional)

1. Chain 8 from corner. (You can adjust this depending on how long you want the loop to be.)
2. Slip stitch into the base of the chain to join.
3. Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
