Wave Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

Today I’m releasing the wave scarf crochet pattern. This beautiful design looks like the waves on the beach in its shades of blue and cream.

This is an easy scarf that has a 2 row repeat. Once you get going, you will quickly see the pattern emerge.

Skill Level

Easy, Confident beginner since it just uses basic crochet stitches. You should know how to sc, hdc, dc, and tr.

Gauge

The gauge was 13 st and 14 rows with sc with a 5mm (H-8) hook. However, gauge is not important when crocheting a scarf.

Dimensions

The scarf measured 70 x 8 inches (177x20cm) after blocking (not including fringe). You can lengthen or shorten it by adjusting the starting chains. Take note that you will need a multiple of 10 +3 chains.

Supplies

• Worsted weight yarn (10ply) #4. Approximately 400m (440y)
• 5mm (H-8) crochet hook

For the wave scarf crochet pattern used 1.5 balls of Caron Cakes in color Faerie Cake and separated the colors for greater control. There was enough left over from the second skein to crochet a beanie. Use whichever colors you have the most left of for the fringes. This 100% acrylic yarn felt soft to the touch and was easy to crochet.

Alternatively, purchase skeins of 3 shades of blue and 1 cream. The wave scarf would also look nice with just 2 or 3 colors. Imagine using a variegated yarn with a cream stripe. Or a black, white, and hot pink wave scarf.

• sc =single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet stitch
• tr = treble stitch
• ch = chain stitch

Wave Scarf Crochet Pattern, Step by Step Instructions

Foundation

1. Chain 213. Chain loosely or use hook half size larger. (Multiple of 10+3)

Row 1

1. Work 1 sc into 2nd chain.
2.  *1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.
3. Repeat from * until the last chain.
4. 1 sc, turn and change color.

Row 2 (Color B)

NOTE: In my actual scarf, I used cream for color B. I am using the teal for this instruction photo so you can see the stitches more clearly.

1. Ch 3 (counts as first tr),1 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1sc.
2. *1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.
3. Repeat from * until last 6 stitches.
4. 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr.
5. Turn and change color.

Rows 3 and Beyond

Repeat rows 1 and 2, changing color every row.

• ROW 3 – Color C, Same as row 1
• ROW 4 – Color D, Same as row 2
• ROW 5 – Color A, Same as row 1
• ROW 6 – Color B, Same as row 2
• ROW 7 – Color C, Same as row 1
• ROW 8 – Color D, Same as row 2
• ROW 9 – Color A, Same as row 1
• ROW 10 – Color B, Same as row 2
• ROW 11 – Color C, Same as row 1
• ROW 12 – Color D, Same as row 2
• ROW 13 – Color A, Same as row 1

Fasten off and weave ends.

Fringing

1. Cut 10 pieces of yarn 12 inches (30cm) long.
2. Fold them in half, creating a loop at the folded end.
3. Insert your crochet hook from back to front through the edge. Hook the yarn loop with your crochet hook and pull it halfway through.
4. Open the loop with your fingers, then pull the loose ends of the yarn strands through the loop. Pull tight to secure the fringe in place.
5. Repeat for the rest of the fringes. Each fringe will be inserted into the treble crochet row. Trim the fringe evenly.

Blocking

To make your scarf look its best, you will need to block it. This shapes and sets the scarf, smoothing uneven stitches and defining the edge. Read more about blocking crochet
